Oolala Dethrones Team Tybee Island (report at 8 pm)
Oolala was again the first across the line and with an already huge lead, they now are the rdigning champions of this race. Both Mischa Heemskerk and Eduard Zanen of the Netherlands dominated this race this year.

Second boat in was Trey Brown and Alan Stewart of Team Velocity. Trey is a relatively new sailor that has watched the transoms of many competitors over the past couple of years, but obviously stopped watching and decided to look at their bows instead.

Defending champs, John Casey and Kenny Pierce of Team Tybee Island were the third boat across the line. With Team Tiki Watersports Orange still not in sight, it is possible that they might end up in 2nd place overall. But only time will tell.

The overall winners approach to a cheering crowd. Oolala wins the Tybee 500

Mischa's mother gives here hero sun a huge huge

Trey Brown and Alan Stewart really came alive, with 3rd, 4th, and 2nd place finishes to end the race. They will place well up in the standings.

Team Tybee is in HOLD position, awaiting the arrival of Tiki Watersports Orange. They will either finish in 2nd or 3rd overall, depending on the finish time of Rod Waterhouse and Jared Sonnenklar.

Tiki Orange has just arrived about an hour later than Tybee Island, and the computations are not complete at this time, so no one knows who took 2nd place overall.

Accelerated Chaos finished right around 8:30, just behind Tiki. Two more boats are out on the course at this report.

They May Get Here Sooner Than Thought (report 5:15 pm)

The wind has definitely switched more to the east and increased, so they fleet could be reaching along pretty quickly at this time.

Three boats have dropped out -- Texas City Dike YC, Chums and Tiki Watersports Yellow. We now have a seven boat fleet racing.

Looks Like Long Day (report at 3:30 pm)

Just arrived at Tybee Island and the only reports or rumors I have heard is that Lauel Sonnenklar heard from Rod Waterhouse and their ETA is 8:30 pm. So, this may be another photoless report late tonight. Pictures taken in the dark just don't turn out.

Meanwhile, Tybee Island will have the Bum's Parade at 6PM tonight. Chuck Bargeron said we should all prepare to get very wet. It seems everyone has water pistols, squirt guns, water blasters and seem even go so far as to have pressure washers and everyone gets soaked. He went on to say if you drive through town at any time and don't want your car full of water, you had better roll up your windows

At any rate, as soon as some news breaks, we will break in (been hearing that on the radio all day, so thought I would steal the phrase)

And They are Off to Tybee Island (report at 10:30 am)
The longest leg of the race has begun. The boats were started in tiers, instead of just on long line, due to beach erosion that has made the area very small. Boats not starting in the first tier will start a minute later, but that time will be given back to them at the finish.

There was little or no surf and all the teams were off on the leg with no mishaps. Well, not quite. Cat in a Hat capsized well after they had cleared the surf line.

Chums I retired before the start. Yesterday they had hit a turtle that jammed the daggerboard back into the daggerboard well and opened a large hole. They could not get it repaired in time for the start

Here are some pictures of the start:

Tybee Island (Left) and Oolala started side by side in the first tier

Below, Steve Lohmayer and Jay Sonnenklar take a small dousing

Chris Green and Jesse Fulmer of Texas City Dike YC easily passed through the surf. After seeing Cat in a Hat capsize and not right the boat immediately, they went back to render assistance, if needed.

Team Tybee had accidently missed one of the mandatory marks around Cape Canaveral. No one filed a protest and since the RC was not there to see the infraction, they had just ignored the inuendo about the incident. However, Team Tybee Island came forth and told the RC they had indeed missed the mark. So, they were assessed a 20-minute penalty.

Winds are out of the Northeast at 20 knots
While there will be good wind today, it will right on the nose for the guys today. This is the longest leg of the race, well over 100miles, and it will be a beat most of the way. This may be another late, late finish.

At this time the surf does not look to be more than a mild challenge.

Stay tuned!
