What if...

You are heading for an upwind finish line. Is it important where you finish?

You bet it is! A lot of boats can be passed or lost at the finish line.
For finishes there are two things you must know:
1) the favored tack
2) the favored end
The favored tack is that tack you may be on that allows the boat to cross the finish line at the most perpendicular angle. (See Diagram)
The favored end is the end of the line that is most downwind.(See Diagram)
There is an AXIOM that always rings true: If the favored tack is port, then the favored end will be starboard, or if the favored tack is starboard, then the favored end will be port.
If you can determine the favored tack, then it is easy to determine the favored end by this axiom. It is not always that easy to figure this out when sighting upwind, but it can be done.
Next month, we’ll do even more on this subject.
