Hi

Me and my friend want to get a boat we can sail solo but also together. We don't have much sailing experience and we are about 360 pounds together. The boat will be sailed on a lake not sea.

There is Prindle 15 for sale near my place... Is it too small boat for two adults?

P15 is best as a singlehander with jib. Its rating allows it to be raced in Portsmouth and do very well by an adult male (a 160 pound one). They are very old now: check for this (crackling noises when you pushon the sides). Mine is all delaminated- but I can't conmplain because I got it for free.

A well sailed P15 has proven to be VERY competitive in open class regattas. However, are your sure you mean with jib? The P15 is uni-rig and if you add a jib correction the Portsmouth number is too low to be competetive.

As for sailing with crew, the P15 has the smallest tramp area I've ever seen. Two kids, maybe. Two adults, no.

If it's cheap and you are learners a smaller boat will do no harm whil;e you get some skills.
If it is an old boat you need to be careful about the condition of hulls and structure.
IF you buy for a good price you can sell on when you hav e a little more idea of exactly what you want......you may find only one of you actually turns up on a regular basis.

I finally got the USSailing site to work and list Portsmouth numbers. The uni-rig P15 is rated faster than the 2-up P16, 76.3 vs 77.5.

To level the comparison, calculate the P16 solo (very easy to solo) and the P15 with a jib. The corrected DPN are now
P16 sloop and solo = 75.2
P15 sloop and solo = 74.4

The little P15 owes the P16 51 seconds per hour. So how can a smaller boat with much less sail are rate faster?

Instead of a jib, why not add a modern flat spin to the very capable uni-rig P15 sailplan. Now when you race a P16 you'll KILL him since the P16 is a downwind pig. You'll owe him 2:10 per hour but so what with a spin?

Bottom line? Buy a stock P16 and have an excellent time learning 1-up or with crew. Great boat, lots around, lots of parts, flies a hull higher than most.

The tone of your post suggested the P15 was the better boat I thought but you said P16????.

Maybe the cause for this is not the boats but the (yardstick) rating system itself ?

My Portsmouth data and spinnaker idea were a simple exercise on how the P15 might fit into an open fleet racing situation. Has anyone ever seen a P15 with spinnaker?

My choice of the P16 was that its a better boat to have a fun time on for a rookie. It holds one or two great, will cruise with 4 aboard, lots of boats around, lots of parts, and can be a B fleet race winnner if sailed well. And you get all of that for about $1000.

As to Wouter comment about a yardstick problem, he's got that right. Portsmouth works pretty well boat vs boat but when you do too much with modifications it gets strange sometimes.

That's exactly what we are looking for. The boat for sale just happens to be Prindle 15. Need to keep looking

Southern Finland. We have good sized lakes and fairly warm summer. People sail a lot here but for some reason catamarans are very rare.

Light air? Does that mean light wind? Heavy air = heavy winds?

Mono would be nice but I have personal reasons for choosing a cat

Nice little mono is great for light air lakes. You want to find from the local sailors what the average is. Don't tell them why you are asking as they wil be very biased against cats. You want the wind to be regularly over 6/7 knots.

Where in Finland are you ?

Currently two sailors are home building 2 F16 catamarans and you could be near to one of them.

Here are pics of one building proces in Finland :

You can contact this this guys to find out where the other is. I'm sure he knows. They are at about the same stage. I think 2 months ago we shipped them 2 fully fitted masts to go onto their boats. But it will be a little while till they are ready to sail.

At 163 kg I think the Prindle 15 is getting very much loaded up, from recollection the P15 trampoline is not very large. I think it will be pushing it a bit. But then again, if you are into it for the fun then sure enough the boat will provide that anyway.
