My Nacra 5.5 SL front crossbar just failed. One end of the dolphin striker pulled out of the beam. I should say it pulled through the beam. It created a good 1.5 by 4 inch hole in the beam where the backing plate in the beam holding the dolphin striker end came right out. The rod holding the mast then pushed part way through the beam, since the dolphin striker was no longer holding it, and bent the beam, but the mast stayed up.

I assume this was a corrosion problem, but I have never heard of this happening. Has anyone else seen this? I don't know how you could easily inspect for such a thing.

Does anyone have any spare Nacra 5.5SL front crossbars lying around? I thought not.

..I have seen that happen down here......when you look at the size of the 'spacer',...the part inside the mast,....it looks REAL light duty.....it would be sensible to redesign a better 'spacer' to distrubute the load more over a given surface area....

What until you see the price of a new beam...

If you don't mind doing some drilling and fabrication, it might be worth it to have a look at industrial aluminum supply houses for Al tubing, which is what the beam really is.

Dwyer Mast co. might also have Al extrusion

Good luck

Hi, Tami,

Isn't the crossbar powdercoated or externally treated in any way?

Clear Anodized. Most anodizing shops will have facilities to anodize the 8'6" beam (just not a mast). The process isn't too expensive and I would estimate it would cost you anywhere from $30 to $75 for the anodizing. You can get this in colors too. (I wonder why no body ever does this).

the same thing happened to my TheMightyHobie18...the rod broke then the main beam broke...twisted the rear beam and it broke.. buddy of mine was on it...fortunately there was a guy in a powerboat that saw what happened and pulled him ashore....I got two used beams from a guy in Texas for $200 bucks...not bad..priced some used ones in FL for $225 a piece.....

I have a N5.0 port hull with two crossbeams.

Take it off my hands, please!
