Caliente Takes First Victory of the Race
Lexis Nexis denied second Yellow Shirt

Caliente and Lexis Nexis had a photo finish with Caliented getting the nod. This is their first time at the pole position for the next day's start. Guess the word means "hot" in espanol and they were hot today.

The wind was blowing well at the start and great at the finish, but during the day the wind had compoletely went dead. We wondered if perhaps Caliente had a good run because they are the lightest weighted team in the fleet.

The last part of the leg had boats all tacking straight downwind toward the finish after the wind had shifted more to the south. Many played the rhumb line, but closely kept their eye on the shoreline for the sea breeze that finally did fill in for the after dash for cash at the finish line.

Lexis Nexis flew into the finish line as did the rest of the fleet

By far the most spectacular finish of the race, there were a number of near tie finishes, all bombing into the beach with spinnakers flying. There were all kinds of close and then very close finishes. Tommy Bahama just nosed out Outer Banks for second spot below.

Alexanders (black boat) got the photo finish in this one

Can't any closer than Baywind (Orange Spin) and Fully Involved (Stripped) below

The Athletes in Action capsized just before the start and dragged by boat across the line on its side.

Overall, not much has changed -- Castrol still maintains a 9-minute lead over Tybee Island, and Alexanders, Tommy Bahama and San Antonio are all with striking distance

Ned Barbee just came by with more video footage of Baywind and Tommy Bahama. Just Click on the images below to view the video

They Are Off on a Screaming Reach to Atlantic Beach
They should cover this 67-mile leg in great time

Winds are not heavy, but very good to attain great speeds on a beam reach, so you can expect an early arrival at today's destination. They suspect the wind will back more to the west and soon should be able to fly spinnakers.

Hope this old RV can get there before the boats do.

We had a talk with Jamie Livingston of Alexanders about their game plan for today

A local TV camerman films Team Lexis Nexis. This is the first time they have had the pole position. (To view the video of the start click on the above image. If you have dial-up connection, click on ME!)

Getting Ready for a Reach to Atlantic Beach
This Leg is a straight shot with no capes or reefs to contend with

The air is light around 8-10 mph and blowing offshore. It would at first appear to be a close to beam reach all the way to Atlantic Beach. The wind is predicted to be northwest which would make for a beam reach and could possibly switch to west making it a great spinnaker run.

We'll just have to see what happens by start time.

Last night the hotel (Blockade Runner) and Team San Antonio both set a great help-yourself meal with all the trimmings, plus a keg of beer and other beverages.

The Blockade Runner Hotel had a great feast for all the teams. Very good food!

But not to be outdone, the Texas folks from San Antonio had some awesome build-your-own burritos and lots of hot stuff to go with it. Below you can see them really hamming it up.

Stand by for the start!
