The Fleet Literally Flew Into Cocoa Beach
Controversy Over Line in Photo Finish

Team Alexanders had a narrow edge over Tybee Island coming to the finish gate. "I got sideways to the last wave and had no steerage and was heading right for the guy holding the flag. He jumped out of the way, but to the south of our boat," said Brian Lambert of Alexanders.

Lambert felt that if the flag holder had jumped the other way, they would have finished with no problem and their would not any controversy. As it was Lambert and Jamie Livingston had to turn the boat around and pull it through the gate.

Meanwhile, Tybee Island took advantage of Alexander's problem and broke the plane of the finish line to take first place.

It was a tough decision for scorekeepers as they look on to the battle between Alexanders and Tybee.

Then it appeared that race officials were going to give the victory to Alexanders. This led to another complaint by Tybee. Chuck Bargeron, manager of Tybee Island said, "If there is a gate there, you have to go through it."

Michael Worrell said, "I will have to read the rule before I make a decision either way."

The rule seems to specifically say if there is a gate, you must go between them. And in a subrule it says that in some cases there may be only one flag. In that case you must finish north of the flag and in no more than fifty yards away.

Either way, Tybee Island still will maintain the overall lead by a very slim margin.

Castrol and San Antonio Continue Doing Well

Team Castrol and San Antonio have been sailing very well this year and came in close behind the two leaders. Jjay Sonneklar simply raised his fist to the sky and Yelled, "Yes!"

Today turned out the first day where the fleet had a lot of spinnaker work. Near the finish, however, the wind velocity rose to near 18 mph and became too much for most of the fleet to fly chutes and still hold the boat down

This boat gets sideways to the surf and almost loses.., just like Alexanders

Lexis Nexis shows great style coming in square with the surf line

Athletes in Action was one of few coming in with a spinnaker

...and this is what happens when you hit a turtle -- notice the board would appear to be down. Well, how could it? The boat is on shore.

Leg 3 - Jensen Beach to Cocoa Beach

The wind is typical for Florida coast mornings -- light and often offshore. That should be the case until the seabreezes kick around noon. You can count on a lot of spinnaker work today, rather than the hot reaches up the coast line as we have had for the last two days.

We had a chance to talk to Matt Struble and Chris Sawyher of Athletes in Action

Hurrah! Finally, we have mastered some of our tech problems and have established satellite connections to get the video uploaded. Around Midnight last night we finally got some video up. This is a new page for the day, so to see that video Click on Leg Ft. Lau to Jensen Bch

The Start -- They're Off!

It was an exciting start in light air and pretty tough surf. It was then that Michael Worrell, Race Director, decided to allow two pushers per team, rather than the standard of two sailors and one pusher.
Nonetheless, the going was tough for a number of boats. They all did get out finally, popped chutes and were on their way to Cocoa Beach some 79 miles up the coastline..

The surf big, the wind light -- it was tough for some:
