The real issue you have is not the pole length but the distance from the tack to the clew.....

This looks like a very good idea/procedure, thanks Dave, will try.
I had a 15'4" pole.........worked great if you wanted to sail deep, but forget reaching!
Thats exactly what I found even with the short pole. That huge arsed Spi just wouldn't reach.
