Over rotation will flatten the sails upwind. This can be good in higher wind, but less power is a performance loss most times.

You can cut away a little more of the stop, drill, tap and insert a stainless bolt. Cut it flush and grind flat as a stop. Cheater than replacements, but a lot more work.

The new steps and bases work really well and wear less. well worth the cost.
