My family would like to make a point of traveling to some open regattas this year. Can anyone offer some reccommendations on their favorite regattas that are within 6 hours driving of central New York?
Thanks,
Rob Turbett

Rob,

I know you're a Shark-er from Canandaigua, so I don't have to mention CMOR.

You might want to check out the Ohio Catamaran Sailing Assoc. (their website hasn't been updated for 2008 yet - some of their events are on the CRAM Schedule Page)

Most of the travel racing in Upstate NY is Hobie 16 and Tiger one-design, with a few 17s and 18s thrown in.

You can check the Chesapeake Bay Schedule here

http://www.sailregattas.com/crac/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=209

Page two has a list of Open Class events.

Check out the Regatta\results tab on the site (www.sailcrac.com) for any race that fits your schedule.... you will find past results and regatta writeups.

May has Gunpowder State park, Sandy beach and onsite camping. Baltimore MD.

Virginia Beach has an open event in Late May. (Sharks were there last year)

June has Rock Hall Yact Club, Dinghy Regatta with Open and A class and camping and pool on the Eastern Shore of the Bay, MD

July has Corscia River Yacht Clubs Annual with a bands and a chicken dinner feast and camping. Eastern Shore of the Bay, MD.

Sept, has CMOR (NY) Roten Point (Conn) and Leukemia Cup on the Potomac River in Washington DC... The ARea C Qaulifier is at Sandy Hook in September.

October has West River Pumpkin Patch. (Annapolis MD)

All the events have a different feel

Take Care
Mark

Roton Point is a nice spot.

New England 100 is fun, 2 days, starts and finish Quonset Point RI and goes around Jamestown Island, and other smaller islands in Narragansett Bay. You can camp and its usually in August.

CMOR and Roton Point always seem to be in conflict on the schedule though... I haven't looked this year.

Out here between the forks on the eastern end of long island we have the "around shelter island" regatta usually in late july early august. In early october we have the "whitebread" race. It's about 35 miles up little peconic bay, around shelter island and back. There are typically 70+ boats-mainly monoslugs but the multihulls have their own division. The party afterwards is legendary.

WoW- Thanks for all the info. Time to plan for a great summer! I would like to venture out to some of these events.
Do any of these events not have a crash boat?
Ok, I also have to ask- which event boasts to have the best food?

Here's the Ontario schedule with a couple of Quebec events thrown in... http://www.cat-alist.com/notices/2008/2008_orca_schedule.pdf
The Quebec and ORCA events have a good number of F18 boats doing battle, all are open events, Also listed are a couple of Hobie division events, I did't notice what you are sailing.... And if you want a 3 day long distance race well laid out with campground stops along the way, the Around Prince Edward County is a fun event.

I really want to do the Round Shelter Island Race, but driving to LI is painful, LI is about 8 miles from Old Saybrook, any CT, MA, RI boats want to leave from OLd Saybrook and race to the race?
