Posts: 3,116 Annapolis, MD | Hmm... ever try to tell a 505 sailor what to do?
Think teenager!
I know the club will be happy to collect their 10 dollar on site registration fee ... they need the $$$ (I sent Macy all of the links and info)
From the scorekeeper's point of view... you only HAVE to type in a sail number... all the rest is gravy. ... You save a lot of effort that way. Of course, the newspapers and public like to see the names and home towns for their little filler articles.

I bet its a similar mind bender for them as the American cup teams now trying to sail the Extreme 40's practicing for the next cup.

Posts: 3,655 Portland, Maine | Its interesting. He's got a lot of good ideas, and is a really good sailor, but he's got a lot of monohull-esque things to reconsider. Sometimes he thinks he has a better idea of how to do things that we, as a multihull community, have had figured out for ages...
...but thats a good thing too. Its made me stop and think about some things such as light air sail trim, in different ways. Outside the box, if you will.
What is really cool though, is that I've got him hooked on the cats. We were blasting down Lake Lanier on Saturday just driving through some huge motorboat wake on a downwind reach, and he goes "damn, this boat is just a ....machine"
Bottom line is, I still have a lot more to learn from him than he has to learn from me IMO. I'm also grateful that I found someone that has the fortitude to put up with my personality defects to sail with me:) | | | Re: WRSC Spring Regatta - Galesville, MD - April 26-27

Eventually the boat speaks to both of you.
As our sport consolidates... Its a good thing to mix and match.
Lots to be said for racing a variety of boats.
I learn lots of things racing on the mono's on Wed nights and some of the big cats or tri's on weekends.

Posts: 3,116 Annapolis, MD | current entries: http://www.sailregattas.com/crac/Regatta...=96&mid=405The 5o5 class has their class rep calling or emailing the fleet from Florida to New York. If a boat is available.... they work to get a helm and sheet to borrow the boat and race. They call you out and insult you if you are not posting! Seems to be effective! Pre Registration closes tonight: http://www.sailregattas.com/crac/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=96On site registration surcharge applies If the scuttlebutt proves out ... we expect almost 20 505's over 20 A cats and 7 Nacra 20's) I get one more chance to watch this crazy rabbit start that 5o5's use.. Always interesting!

Posts: 3,116 Annapolis, MD | As I understand it... they don't use a fixed starting line
The fleet gathers above the fixed start/finish line. On the time signal the rabbit... a pre selected 505. will start leeward of the fleet on port going up wind at max speed. A power boat will follow on his transom. keeping other 505's off his butt.
The 505 fleet will start on starbord AFTER the rabbit has passed them.
They feel that it gives you the fairest and cleanest start relative to our fixed line starts.
I am still trying to figure out how.. you would get a high speed start with boats around you.... having to time the rabbit etc etc.

Posts: 1,226 Atlanta | Huh, I didnt know the 505's used rabbit starts in regattas.
505 have one person on the wire right? So you have one person trapped out, crossing the stern of a POWER boat? That doesnt sounds safe. Especially in light air, when the lead rabbit is moving slow.
I guess it keeps people from being early, they dont want to run into the prop of the power boat.
The windsurfers use a power boat too, but that boat is moving at full throttle, it doesnt seem fair on a long start line, it would seem like you always want the port end of the line to get across the line first, no matter if the line is square. | | |
