Posts: 5,558 Key Largo, FL & Put-in-Bay, OH... | Everybody Rick has talked to on the beach so far has said they flipped at least once and many flipped twice, sometimes from the wind and sometimes from hitting sand bars.
Kenny Pierce and Jamie Livingston, who won the leg, capsized twice.
Rick will have a wrapup story and pictures posted as soon as he can find his motorhome. Wasn't easy finding a parking place what with so many people taking their mothers out to breakfasts, brunches and dinners today. | | | Re: Tybee 500 -- Official thread for all input

Posts: 6,049 Sebring, Florida. | Thanks for the updates Mary and Happy Mother's Day too!
A couple questions for Rick when he gets the info,
1. What was the average speed of the 1st. place boat? (or tell us the distance they sailed so we can figure it out)
2. It's been blowing 20+ out of the southwest all day here in Sebring, only about 100 miles north west of Hollywood, did the wind really die over there or was the beach captain standing behind a big condo? How can it be windy in the Keys and here but not there, right between the two? Here's the weather I got off the internet, Ft. Lauderdale Airport, 22 gusting to 28.
Current Conditions Local Forecast Hourly Forecast Local Doppler Warnings / Advisories Satellite Images Conditions at nearby location: Fort Lauderdale / Hollywood International Airport, FL Mostly Clear 95°

Amazing. After Card Sound Bridge, 8 boats were close to one another, Trey had spin problems and was back, and one boat flipped after the start. The 8 boats flew spins until the shore forced them to gybe, from the bridge we could see the shallows they gybed into, and then Kenny in the lead hit bottom and flipped. Boats 2 and 3 also hit bottom and one flipped. 4 through 8 headed up and made it around. They were pretty spread out at this point but the wind died for a bit in the ocean and they grouped back up. | | | Re: Tybee 500 -- Official thread for all input

Actually, it was Seacats and Cat in the Hat tangoing today - Cat Fever is "the other blue boat".

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | Thanks for the great race coverage Mary Rick and all .
Jake -you're not racing ? It must be difficult watching them , are you alt crew and will you be hopping aboard latter ?
All the best to all the teams and crews . Say Hi for me, hope to be there next May to race .
A happy safe race adventure for all as part of a great race and Eastern Seaboard cat racing tradition .
So many in the 1000 mile and 500 mile events over the years with so many great memories and amazing racing stories to tell .
What a great event to be part of .
take care
No plans for me to race at this point - I am the backup but hoping I don't need to get on a boat. It was tough today! Watching the guys take a beautiful spin run up north to Hollywood was awesome and I wanted to be out there. However, tomorrow looks like a day full of gonzo-reaching. Offshore breeze, very gusty, hands-full / no relaxing kind of sailing. I'll probably feel better tomorrow!

Posts: 6,049 Sebring, Florida. | I just watched the Orlando weather, cold front coming tonight (but only 5 degrees cooler) with north wind 15-25+ At least it's not on shore but it won't be a spinnaker run, that's for sure.

Posts: 5,558 Key Largo, FL & Put-in-Bay, OH... | Here's an explanation again of how to use the tracking map:
When you go to our Tybee 500 page, click on "Tracking" in the box at the right side. It will show you a sort of map with a bunch of little bubble things all kind of clumped together. They are in groups of two -- a black round thing with a little orange pointer on the bottom and an associated, colored circle with a number in it.
The orange pointer on the bottom of the black thing tells you where the boat was at the last report, and they seem to be updating positions about every 10 minutes. Point your mouse hand finger on the black bubble, and it will tell you the time when that position was posted.
The color in the attached circle tells you which boat is reporting, and the number in the colored circle tells you the number of the report, the highest number being the most current.
The legend on the left side of the page beside the map tells you which color is which boat. Orange is Marley's Team 1, which has an orange boat, and it displays as orange on the map. Yellow is Marley's Team 2, which has a yellow boat and displays as green on the map. White is Marley's Team 3, which has a white boat and it displays as blue on the map.
Important: In order to better see what is going on, you need to spread out the gaggle of bubbles. So over to the left side is a ladder-type thing with a little bar on it. You can move that bar up on the "ladder" a rung or two at a time to expand the map and spread out the "bubbles."
And if you want to see what the shoreline really looks like, click on "Satellite," and it will give you a google view, which is sometimes more interesting.
If you keep the tracking page open, refresh the page whenever you think about it, because it updates the positions about every 10 minutes.
Oh, yes, and you can use your "hand" pointer to move the map up and down and all around by holding down your left mouse button. | | |
