I've heard that some top sailors don't like the gybing boards and have "bogged" them in the wells so that they don't gybe. Also, the trailing edge of my boards are getting chewed up from normal use. I suspect that the slop may be causing my problems. Any comments or solutions?

They are not really gybing boards, more like twisting boards.
Since they stiffened up the boards after the early ones were a bit brittle, they do not seem to twist like as much.
With the 1st set that I had, I could really feel an odd lifting sensation once you got them locked in [mostly on flat water] - not so with the newer ones.

I noticed one of the Infusions at Weston Sailing Club having it's slots filled recently, the owner told me that 'all the top guys are doing it' so there is probably something in what you say. Where are you based btw?
Paul - did you notice your failing boards when your fancy dancy gadget trapeze adjuster dropped you in the drink on that calm day at Pevensey? I've never seen a crew looked so scared and I can still hear her screams today......

Are they being fixed straight with the hulls or at an angle inboard or outboard.

One minute you are cruising along and the next it all goes blue/green and bubbly! About 20 meters from the finish too!
I am pleased to say that nacra upgraded the adjusters after that.
I try not to remember the screaming that day - like something from silence of the lambs, but it was the last time I WON some bloody thing too!

Guys. Honestly, what do we mean by "gybing" boards and "lifting sensation". A-cat thinking? Ncik's comment is highly relevant. Do they tilt the boards inwards? If so, how much?

Btw. We've only had the "new" boards that are told to be more stiff. No lifting feeling there.

Recent news is that Nacra is from this even moment customising boards for every boat they deliver. This reason is told to be that certain boats have been delivered with boards that don't fit very well. I'm wondering if any tilting is made simultanously.

cheers,
jonas

I'm not sure, next time I speak with Grant I'll ask him and let you know.

If you turn the boat on its side and put the board in, as you push down on it, it will rock on the knuckle in the slot opening so that the leading edge stays where it is but the trailing edge will move to leeward.
This is well demostrated by the handsome bloke in the yachts and yachting test on the nacra europe website.
the movement is only slight at the exit from the hull, but because the board stays fixed at the top of the hull, it is in effect twisting with a greater angle of attack at the tip.
This angle of attack creates lift to windward.
No need to raise the windward board because it is doing the same.
The downside is that you will get more twist on a windy day when you perhaps want less.
i wish that I had kept my old boards and use the new ones on windy days.

Shouldn't that be the other way around? Leading edge moves and trailing edge is fixed.

Centre of area/pressure should be forward of vertical pivot point of a gybing board.

Gybing boards on 505's explained.

Grant has had our boards filled in as thats what all the top boys do, as the lift they give is not worth it. Or sumthing like that.

Another thing to do with the infusions is to sikaflex the bungs on as they they stop that leaking.

I'll ask Grant tomorow.

Have you had (a) boards filled or (b) slots filled so that edges cannot move as originally planned by Nacra? Pictures please.

Thanks.

Sikaflex, ummm dunno wat a 5200 product is, but wat i do know is that sikaflex is black or white sticky (and very messy) watertight like glue. It stops ur bungs leaking.

Slots filled in so boards dont orignaly move as planned. adding some thickness to the boards would ruin thier shape.
