He told you NOT to release the cunningham, correct? Sweetness will be glad to hear that. Since the back of the boat is always putting stuff on her list it will be nice to take something off. Kathy thanks you John.

no kidding...what was it? 18 months ago a trailer incident destroyed one hull? Hull replaced, then the whole boat was airmailed to the woods by a twister? Two new hulls this time and now the mast....boy, I would be soul searching.

With regards to the downhaul, I suspect that when you see an a-cat mast break in a pitchpole that the downhaul was still cranked. We talk here locally about being sure to release it for the run - especially since we sail in some pretty gusty stuff regularly. I've seen and experienced some pretty violent pitchpoles on the a and haven't seen any damage. It adds a lot of pressure to the mast.

There was also the incident/damage with the jet ski a few months earlier that same year at Juana's . . .

If I read JW's post correctly, Greg was telling TO release the downhall when going down wind even in heavy air to avoid tweaking the mast. So......still gotta keep Sweetness busy up there.

releasing the downhaul shifts the "load" from the luff to the leech.

Definitely need to pop it off when running downwind with the chute.
