Posts: 749 Santa Cruz, CA | And to further the legendary status of this Wave sailor. The sun was starting to go down and the conversation at the club went something like: "That guy bought it a week ago." "Uh oh! Should we keep the skiff rigged just in case?" "Naw, he's alright, the guys a San Francisco Bar Pilot. It's just going to take a while." "Cool, let's go get some rum." Good to see you up there Skipshot! J

Posts: 749 Santa Cruz, CA | Wait at Wet n Wild a few years ago I gave you a half gallon and come home to an invoice. WTF ? Seriously thanks if you weren't chasing I probably would have never done it. No worries Rich. I think if the general public saw sailboat racing from my vantage point, they would definitely get into it. Events like this have the ability to do wonders for cat racing. Several people came up to me at the club and made the standard comments like, "I sailed a Hobie 16 back in the day..." But then several people added, "I never realized how fast those spnnaker rigged cats go, I've only seen them sitting on the beach". One guy even said, "It's f*****ing incredible how fast those things are downwind". So there was definitely an air of amazement. One slight thing, and I almost hesitate to initiate this here, but I think it needs to be addressed. We need to look at the charts a little better. Several people sailed in a restricted zone, and i think I motored into it as well. It started to turn into a pissing match over on SA and I spent the morning PMing the accusers to keep it on the positive. They deleted or edited their posts. (Thanks guys). No biggie, **** happens, as liaisons for the catamaran community venturing into the monohull racing world we have to dot our Is and cross our Ts a little more than most. The accused have called the RC and accepted their DSQ. More pics here: http://surfcityracing.smugmug.com/gallery/8478973_BctiB#557558787_3U4B8J

Posts: 9,582 North-West Europe | Pardon me highlighting the following comments but they do really show why H16's and "brand only" are not the future to catamaran sailing. And why the "dude boats" (a misnomer in my opinion) and mixed regatta's are. I quote : Events like this have the ability to do wonders for cat racing.

There was a time when either had their day, but those days are gone and we can't get them back by doing what we always did. A new playbook is required and it will be really helpful when all cat builders are on board with that. Wouter

Wouter Wouter, I'm assuming you're referencing the Hobie 16 when you say: 'There was a time when either had their day, but those days are gone and we can't get them back by doing what we always did.' I have to disagree, the Hobie 16 has done and still does exceptionally well with an OD philosphy and as an OD class, they also seem to be pretty happy with their class. The H16 class consistantly get's numbers at almost every regatta I attend and if we are measuring success by numbers it clearly shows the model works. Your constant poo pooing of OD racing is as tiresome as my hardon for hanidcap racing, let's both take a break.

I was saying that a class like the Sunfish had their day and even though that class still has sizeable OD events it is not the future of dinghy sailing.
That is not poo-pooing, that is looking honestly at the situation at hand.
Any statements otherwise will only delay us unnecessarily in getting back on track.

I admit that is a cold harsh truth but I too didn't make the world that way.

Posts: 984 2017 F18 Americas Site | Thank you Jeremy for getting the thread back on track with that kind of threat!
Personally I was expecting to do this regatta then say no more I have done it once and that is fine. That did not happen. As soon as Eileen and I finished the race we were planning on how to make it easier next year, logistically and sailing-wise. Though sailing-wise I did not expect it to be as comfortable as it was. Every F18 that I talked with after the finish had a great time. I think we will all do it again and will be able to talk it up to 15 (maybe 20) next year.
We (me, John W, Pease and others) will put a nice package of information together for the participants next year to make it easier. Information like how to handle autos and trailers, how to get around the course, conditions to expect, supplies to bring and so forth.
As I mentioned in an earlier post this was a "soft" long distance race. Meaning that with the chase boat, Jeremy and the trailers of Daisy and Frank, we were all pretty sure everything would be okay. Easing the sailors minds definitely made the fun factor go way up!
Thank you all, Sailors Support and RC for a great weekend!
