You're kidding, I presume? Hobart (Hobie) Alter, inventor of the Hobie 14, 16, etc.

Other than the fact that it conjures up images of a slow, furry animal with big teeth, "Beaver" is genious for marketing to young, bar-hopping, hormone-driven guys.

Available out of Long beach but seen all over the beach at most races.

I believe the Tornado came out of the B class. In retrospect, the 4 classes look to be box rule/formula from way back. N'est pas?

There was a B Class when I started racing in 1965 on a Shark. There were plenty of them. Mainly the B-Lion. In Fact the Shark started out as a B-Class, then added more sail area and went into the C-Class, but way underpowered for that class.
And yes, the Tornado was a B Class. Many others as well.

Yep. The Hobie 14 was an A-Class and the Hobie 16 was a B-Class.

when and why were the A,B,C,D classes developed. Seems to me when the H14 came about, it was the ONLY class, or at least it was its on class. There were no formula or box rules back then were they?

I believe the international classes (A,B,C,D) were formed in the early 1960's by IYRU. Mary should be able to look up ihe info in a book I sent down there a while back.

Gordy is spot on. Multihulls originally had no fleets and opted go by size and sail area, thus the A, B, C, D. Similar to F16-18-etc.
From which sprang the B-Lion, Shark, Tornado, et al
