Posts: 1,253 Columbia South Carolina, USA | Whats in a name? The Exploder...not so clever marketing to me, seems my boat will, ammm, explode everytime I take it out.
And Beaver, well with that Muffer on it, its got to be fast.
Infusion. Is that from Food Network?
Tiger.. Why do we name boats after animals?
Capricorn...Why? and Huh?
Viper...Now thats cool, but animals again?
NACRA....Is the N American Catamaran racing association still in existence?
"A" Cat...yes its a cat. Where is the "B" Cat? Ive seen C and D, maybe I missed that production model.
Mystere...still a mystery
Stiletto...I am quite fond of the shoes, not sure how it correlates with a big multihull, but its okay
Supercat...Loved the cartoon cat on some of the boats
Prindle...Mr Prindle, are you out there? Never heard of him...
Hobie...Anyone know the origin of this name? Its synonomous with cats
Trac...What?
G Cat...G-spot, G-string, gee, just Giesler I guess
Solcat...Must be a westy coast thing
Wave...Beauty queen or ocean?
If I named a boat today, it would be.....
The WTF18 Hampster..Small, fast, cunning, bites hard when provoked, and its an animal name so its acceptable

You're kidding, I presume? Hobart (Hobie) Alter, inventor of the Hobie 14, 16, etc.
Other than the fact that it conjures up images of a slow, furry animal with big teeth, "Beaver" is genious for marketing to young, bar-hopping, hormone-driven guys.

Can you imagine if a hot chick were to buy one and then try to find crew?
"Hey, you want a ride on my Beaver?"

I believe the Tornado came out of the B class. In retrospect, the 4 classes look to be box rule/formula from way back. N'est pas? Prindle...Mr Prindle, are you out there? Never heard of him...

Posts: 1,253 Columbia South Carolina, USA | Shark, now theres a good name for a boat. Thanks, had a memory lapse on Geoff Prindle.
Mary and Rick, when and why were the A,B,C,D classes developed. Seems to me when the H14 came about, it was the ONLY class, or at least it was its on class. There were no formula or box rules back then were they?

Posts: 5,590 Naples, FL | What about weather related names?
I know tornado and hurricane are already out there.
What about:
Lightning Hail gentle breeze heatwave thunder (but thunder ALWYAS comes after lighting...Ca-chinga!) Frost Freeze Flood Quake Tempest (another boat class?) Sunami Typhoon
Others: Firestorm Inferno Wildfire (isn't that a cheesy horse-movie name?) Fury Brainfart (I sugest for a "senior-class" fleet)

Posts: 3,355 Key Largo, FL and Put-in-Bay, ... | Gordy is spot on. Multihulls originally had no fleets and opted go by size and sail area, thus the A, B, C, D. Similar to F16-18-etc. From which sprang the B-Lion, Shark, Tornado, et al Rick | | |
