Looking at a 96 Hobie 16. The nada book shows 3500 for low retail. I was trying to get a real idea of what these things go for. When looking at ads online, I see a bunch of boats but they are all 1986 or older for 700-1500$.

So... Good boat, good sails, trailer, etc, is $3500 reasonable?

I paid $1,675 for a 1991 model, without sails, and plasitc rudders. It depends on what kind of shape and equipment you are getting. Race Rudders is a plus. Inspect the hulls, tramp, and sails for wear and damage. Be sure the mast is straight. I didn't notice it until I got home with my 91 that the mast is slightly bent. If everything is in good shape, a 1996 model with a trailer may be worth $3,500.

It is hard to find a mid to late 90s boat. Not many of them on the market. I think that you are money ahead to purchase a later model.

Sounds a little high to me, but like Dave said, you don't see too many late model 90ish 16s for sale. There's been a guy here in San Antonio that has been looking to sell his 16 (I think it was a 97?) for a little over a year at about the same price as the one you're looking at. Last I heard, he still didn't have any buyers. You might want to seriously lowball on the 96 and see what happens. For what it's worth, I bought my 1987 16 in 1993 for $2,000.

A new hobie 16 is worth over $7000.A 1996 model well taken care of does not depreciate that much.Half price is a good deal.If you value what a boat looks like,then the newer model is the way to go.If your serious about buying a good boat then pay the price.If not save yourself a $1000 and buy an older boat that looks like hell.(older boats can still be made to preform).If this boat was located close to where I live I,d sell my 1986 model and buy the 1996 model at that price.Just my $0.02

No offense, but those values seem a little low to me - or maybe things are just different in the Northeast. I sold my '88 for $1750 in 2001 without a trailer and had several interested buyers. Maybe these are insurance or replacement values, but certainly not retail values.

Cosidering retail on a new 16 is around $7500 without a trailer I'd love to get that deal!

Sounds like $3500 is about right for a '96, but talk 'em down since that's before the integrated travelers.

I purchased a used 16 last summer. 1985, from the original owner (Original purchase receipt). Garage kept, in impeccable condition. I paid $1K. Probably could've gotten it down $100, but I thought that $1K was a fair price. Sounds like you got a great price on your boat. Supply and demand at any given moment.



The poster is speaking of used boats. Once that new boat hits the water, about 25% of the value floats away. If you disagree, lets try an experiment... Buy a new one off of the showroom floor and then resell it. Let us know the results...

The prices I listed are used boat prices and from what I have experience are very close to the going prices. A new H16 list price is $7,795 without shipping or a trailer, even though some Hobie dealers will sell the H16 for $7,500. I bought my new H16 for $7,000 but that dealer is no longer in business. He actually closed not to financial problems but due to the fact he did not have the time to run his business and sail, so he chose to sail.
