Posts: 3,906 Clermont, FL, USA | Racine, Wisconsin Aug 9-13, this is a combined event with PRW.
The announcement was made at the General Membership meeting during the NAF18 Championship, I posted this information on the NAF18 site yesterday, additional details to follow.
Multiple bids were presented for 2011 at the General Membership meeting, the class voted for a stand alone event at Newport.
We are also working on submitting a bid for Worlds 2012.

Posts: 833 St. Louis, MO, | That's great. Racine will be a great venue for that event. It's on my calendar already!!!
It's also great to see so many people vieing for hosting the event. It shows a lot of positive energy for the class.
Certainly would like to have a World Class Venue for the Worlds if we host it. Not sure where you guys are talking about? With all of the shipping of boats I'd think they would want to put it at the end of the season so they don't lose their boats in the middle of their season? My thoughts would be early Nov. in Tampa. Great wind and weather and at the very end of the season.
Love to host it in Dec in the Keys but I'm not sure if we could find a good venue. Obviously not the Park we run Tradewinds out of. I don't think the Islander would work either. They have enough beach but not enough access. Is there any beach anywhere in the Keys???? The A Cats ran a Worlds down there but I've never visited that venue?
Just random thoughts.

I think the A cats used the Islander. Mike you didn't get an F-18 did you?

Posts: 3,293 Long Beach, California | ABYC has decided to submit a bid for the 2012 Worlds. The International Class may or may not accept it. The constraints of having the event in the dead of winter are not conducive to an event that will have good weather except for some of the very Southernmost parts of Florida where resources become difficult. ABYC will be proposing sometime around September. A successful event has logistical resources (race committee volunteers and equipment, a good beach, room for containers and an RV city), proximity to transportation hubs (like Los Angeles - shipping, air and rail), and a good chance for favorable weather.
ABYC has hosted the Tornado and I-14 Worlds. They have National-level race officers and the foundation for an International Jury. I think they'll put together a strong bid, but it will be up to the International Class to decide what to do with it... the F18 Worlds in AUS only drew about 80 boats. The Tiger Worlds in March of 2005 drew 100. If they want to have a Worlds in the US, there has to be some concession with regard to geography, budget, and breeze and an acceptance that even if the event were in January, a limited number of Euros would come.

David Ingram David: Need a food caterer for Aug event? We have a 20' concession trailer. Philly Cheese Steaks, Italian Sausages and Hot Dogs and Fries. Self contained and everything would be HOT unlike some of the venues I have been to in my 30 years of sailing. Doug

Posts: 833 St. Louis, MO, | That's great that ABYC has stepped up to host in 2012. It sounded like you guys had great weather for the F18 NA's.
Just curious what ties you guys to Sept. Is it the weather patterns? Does it get to cold after Sept? Or does the wind die? I'm not familiar enough with Southern CA to know.
And Yes, I understand that having the Jury and Race Officers are an important piece of the puzzle. Typically pulling in the Race Committee can be imported almost anywhere that has the facilities. Getting the International Jury is a tougher one. We had a heck of a time getting just one judge for our event. I can't imagine what a Worlds requires.
You really want to work hard to attract the Euro F18 crowd. I wonder if the International F18 Class has looked into how to provide container shipping at a reduced rate. The problem is that if you don't get the Euro contingent here you end up with just a big US event and it's not seen as a true Worlds.
It would be nice to see a couple containers out of Europe and one out of OZ. Wishfull thinking I'm sure. If anyone knows a thing or two about container shipping it should be Hobie and Nacra.
And No, I haven't got an F18. Though I did have a Tiger for a while. I like the F18 class and I like the F18 concept.

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | Mike... F18 Worlds is set up based on berths that sailors have qualified for... the U.S. only gets a couple right now. I think there is a chance to qualify for a berth on site... but still it wouldn't necessarily lead to a large U.S. only attendance While yes, the US F18 population has only allotted us 6 or so slots in the past, the host country usually gets many more berths by default in the year they host the event.

Posts: 606 League City, TX | Having a Worlds in September will make it very difficult for Europeans to attend since you would have to load the cats into containers by August or maybe even July (which obviously is the middle of the racing season overhere). IMHO the best period would be Nov thru March. The same arguement applies for Worlds events in Europe - Nov thru March would suit North American sailors very well. But then where are you going to sail a Worlds in Europe at that time of year...We are in the same hemisphere and experience the same seasons. Yes, in the Southern US it is possible to sail in the winter - but the weather patterns are not consistent so an event could end up taking place in freezing conditions or with multiple days wiped out because of too much wind/not enough. Long Beach is one of the worlds largest container ports - and the transit time from Europe to Long beach is a little under 1 month - so ship boats early August to arrive early September. The 30 knot carnage on the first day of 2005 Tiger worlds, plus the subsequent lost days sailing shows what happens when desire from Europe for an Event in March overrides what weather data and the locals say is the best time to host an event. We appreciate this makes it more difficult for Europeans to attend. The intent is not to exclude people by scheduling an event in the middle of their season (it would not be in the middle anyway - more towards the end) - it is to make sure you have an event with a good probability of top sailing conditions. Chris.

Posts: 699 SE Pa. or Chesapeak Bay | Doug,
Texas has great bootmakers and hats ... and I know you have plenty of Beef in Texas .... but the secret to a Philly Cheese Steak is not the Beef .... it's the ROLL. So I have to ask, where are you going to find a Philly Roll in the great state of Texas. Cheese Wiz is only used by venders in Philly selling to tourists ... swiss cheese is just verboten!!! ... and "French Bread" doesn't cut it!!! either ...
Now we here in Philly don't claim to make any kind of Barbeque ... or Maryland Crab Cakes ... or New Orleans Jambalay .... so ....
As Rocky would say "Yo, what's youz doing ... it's the roll ... Adrian go to Sarcone's and get Doug some real South Philly rolls".
Now those hot Tomalleys in the roasted corn husks .... Ya good. My friend flys home from business trips to Houston with those .....
Harry
PS: Living 12m from "Centercity" Philly as the crow flys straight down West Chester Pike (don't believe the TV ... there is no such place as "Downtown Philly". If you say that and ask for directions we know you are a tourist and send you to Harrisburg !!!!)
