The race discussed in this thread was the one where Jim raced (in a bouy race) solo and not the one where he raced with Chris (a single distance race around the bouys).

In the bouy race jim started out with a spi he had lend from someone else but removed it te second day as it was blowing kind of hard in that regatta. (around 15 knots and sometimes more) In these conditions a spi is kind of a handfull.

In the first distance race the other crew was using the spi setup himself so there was none to lend out to Jim. To bad really because the weather was perfect for a spi in the distance race. But than again Chris is a novice cat crew coming from a dinghy class and I'm not sure wether he sailed with a spi there.
