Posts: 1,187 38.912, -95.37 | Result of hearing: RC erred by giving boat 3 a finish whistle. This made several boats alter course. No fair way to provide redress to all boats effected. Race thrown out. If the SI tell skippers a fixed number of laps, that's the responsibility of each skipper to count their laps themselves. Not the RC. The RC sees a boat cross the line and simply honk to notify the time was duly noted. If one competitor got it wrong and all the ones behind follow like sheeps, all the sheeps should be disqualified with the one who got it wrong. But that could only be decided by a protest committee. None of the sheep should be allowed any redress whatsoever. If you are a competitor in that race who got it right and your race was thrown out, you should protest the RC. Unless I'm reading that report wrong, or there are some facts I've misinterpreted from the short report, throwing the race away is against the rules. Actually, wouldn't it be the responsibilty of a competitor to protest all the boats that sailed the wrong course? No fault of RC, first boat across the line gets a toot, unless the line is closed, then they must pay attention. Hope all is well and all are just getting wet.

There is no requirement in the RRS for a whistle (or any other sound) at the finish. Unless there is something in the SIs requiring a whistle at the finish, this is a classic case of an RC shooting itself in the foot because they thought they knew the rules, but really didn't. A closed start/finish line in a regatta with only 21 boats is unnecessary. It serves no purpose other than to confuse the competitors and create unnecessary tactical situations. November flag is up, No more racing today. Proper signal for "no more racing today" is AP over Alpha (if a race is not in progress) or November over Alpha (if a race is in progress). If there's a race in progress, displaying the November flag means "race is abandoned, return to the starting area". Otherwise, it has no meaning. | | | Re: IWCA Wave National results

Then please explain why one boat "getting a finish whistle" would make several boats alter course and result in the race being tossed.

Posts: 3,293 Long Beach, California | I would guess (I'm not there) that someone went through the open line on the way to the next mark, someone on the RC hadn't been counting laps and thought the boat was finishing, so they blew the whistle. Boats in earshot hear the whistle and figure they misread the course, and bore away hard (if beating) to go through the line, too. Boats not in earshot (or more confident) continued on. Boats that altered course probably dropped some positions, assuming they came to the finish line while the RC was figuring out they had screwed up and told racers to continue sailing. If there wasn't a BIMBO taking roundings, it might have been tough to reconstruct the race in a fair way so that only the boats requesting redress got satisfaction.
Bottom line - there was an RC action that caused confusion. It very well may have been the fairest thing to toss the race. Armchairing it from out here on the internets may be engaging, but it is impossible, IMO, to second guess this one with any sort of confidence.
