So we just had Tascat on the weekend, (tasmanian state champs) One of the guys from up north turned up with a H16 with kite.

I think now I know why they only let the under 16's sail them with kites!! man that looks dangerous!

I would say that the jib is too tight causing the mast to counter rotate. This is an issue on H 16's in big breeze. (looking at pic it looks like it may happen in a little less breeze with a chute) The way to avoid it is, is sheet the main first then pull the jib in. if thas doesn't work you send the crew in to kick it around.

wow - I can't believe that mast stayed in one piece. It's not helping that the spinnaker isn't hoisted fully and they appear to be reaching to get powered up. Watch this wreck.

They were trying to get across the finish line, it was too tight for us to carry the kite on that leg and i was surprised they managed it!

looking at the picture blown up (view image, zoomin) it does not look like the mast is counter rotated. I think that we would see the round mast head in profile if it were. Looks like they are carrying the chute while sailing too much on a reach. Did they make it through the regatta without breaking?

Yeah they made it all the way through the 6 race regatta and its not an unusual occurrence. so the guys said.

The guys on the rescue boat were the ones saying how dangerous it was looking.

if you follow the link above the picture you can get to the full size original image

The H16 mantra!

Lots of rake. Jib hal stretch? Insufficient mainsheet tension?

How deep is that lee hull submarining? 1 foot, 2 feet?

The mainsheet looks to be centered from the pic.

Comptips are only for the litigation sensitive US, right? This is Tasmania.

My question is: is that faster than not flying the spin?

Euros don't have comptips. That boat needs some tuning, looking at it again, that's pretty fricken scary. Could be a really noodley extrusion, but there looks to be a lot of twist in that main. They need to sheet in, but it's probably b to b right now. More jib hal tension, shrouds up a pin, main at full hoist? Who knows? Shouldn't do that.

We bought a 16 that had a mast that did that, even when properly rotated. It was just a crappy extrusion and the boat never went very well to windward either.

Took it back and Hobie changed it for a decent one. Boat won the Nationals last year - much better!
