Watch this one carefully. Last night I was hearing reports of them trying to burn the oil.

A series of controlled burns is scheduled to begin at 16:00 today. The work boats will corral bulk oil with fire proof boom the controlled burns lasting around an hour for each batch. The EPA will monitor air quality impacts. The way I think about that: Most of this stuff gets burnt anyway in cars, trucks, ships etc - albeit in a more controlled manner and with a lot of the sulfur removed.

A lot of the spill area is 'sheen' - a thin layer that can be as little as 3 molecules thick that produces the 'rainbow sheen'.

There is a lot of effort going into shore line protection, with tens of thousands of feet of protective boom ordered and resources mobilized up and down the coast.

Chris.

Anyone else remember how bad Tampa Bay was from the tanker in '93? Nasty-butt tar balls everywhere.

I think burning the oil is good idea. Having that much oil in the coastal wetlands would be a nightmare.

I saw the plan last night, however it is always easier to burn oil on paper than from a boat out in the Gulf. and they have not stopped the leak. They could be burning oil for weeks.

Just wait for the howl when tourism and the fisheries are impacted by this mess. The slick is now as big as West Virginia and can be easily seen from space.

And I'm paying $3 a gallon for diesel. Maybe I should invest in a skimmer and go on a Gulf vacation.
