She manually triggered two EPIRB beacons, but the water activated one is still off: http://soloround.blogspot.com/

A smidgen of good news - her personal EPIRB and her boat mounted EPIRB are both signaling in close proximity to each other - hopefully she is still on the boat and waiting rescue. Winds reported to be at 90kph and seas at 6 meters.

A chartered Quantas Airbus should be on scene within two to three hours.

Good news indeed! Any idea how the stick came down?

The southern ocean, winter, howling gale, stick in the water, rigging everywhere. That meets my definition of nightmare.

Oh yeh, towering waves.

Isn't it SOP to cut the rig free if it comes down? Easy to question things with out being there, but isn't a mast slamming into a hull an easy way to turn it into a fish hotel?

She had been knocked down several times in 60 knot wind. The rig probably came down after a knockdown. Of course we wont know until she gets home.

She was in the Indian Ocean 2 weeks before officially winter started. Mother nature didn't get that memo apparently and was throwing knarly weather at her.

You can say that - but it only counts if she was mature enough to realize what she was getting into...I mean, seriously, some of the stuff we all did as kids might fall into the same category but were weren't in it necessarily because of our bravery. Some **** is just stupid.

There's a very thin line between brave and stupid!

Going around solo at the -wrong- time of year??

Umm...Stupid in my opinion.

+1

The line between "brave" and "stupid" is often razor-thin.

Yes, and there is a lot of brain research out there that indicates that the decision making process in teenagers is very different from adults, in that teenagers do not factor in the consequences of their decisions anywhere near the degree adults do....any parent of a teenager can probably attest to that! This holds up even for those teenagers deemed to be "more mature". I am glad that it looks like this is ending well (though she is still out there in the middle of the ocean), but it hopefully should put a damper on the plans of 13 and 14 year olds with similar ideas (but considering the above, that has to come from the adults surrounding them!).

If brave or stupid depends onyl on the outcome. If everything goes fine, she is judged as brave, if something goes wrong she is judged as stupid. She is as any solo round the world sailor. There would be no different outcome if she is 20 years older anyway. If she is to be judged as everything, than inspiring.

Cheers,

Klaus

how about the lack of brain power by the parents to allow this? i know we had a lengthy discussion about this in the past, but if the girl perished, WHY shouldn't the parents be found as liable, criminal and down right stupid

yes she was brave to attempt it.. kudos young lady

i couldn't agree more with Jake, when i was a kid i did MANY brave, risky, uninformed things. looking back, i was "invincible" (aka - naive / stupid)

how in the world can a minor make an informed decision that risks their life? they can't possibly understand the consequences.
