Posts: 3,906 Clermont, FL, USA | Those last two races must have had some light and shifty winds leaving a lot of teams totally screwed. There are some monster finishes for teams well down the leader board. Looks like it had to be an incredibly frustrating day on the course.
Kudo's to the top teams that can still pull good scores in those conditions.

Notice the throw-out hasn't changed...would put Greg & Jacques mid twenties thru eight races.
and WOW - checkout the Goodall's score - swap the 11 for a 46 and it rockets them into 3rd!

Posts: 5,525 | You can get the replays, the races were only ~28 min. Of course, they only show those 16 boats with trackers.

Why does it look like there is a LOT of running down the start line right before the starts? Is that correct...or is it the way it's tracking?

It was because there was a massive pin end bias to the starts. Race 7 nearly all boats started on port. If you watch race 8 a couple of boats can't even make the pin on starboard - they have to tack to get around it. I can understand having a pin end bias to a start with 90 boats but not being able to make it around the pin reminds me of our club races......not a worlds. | | | Re: F18 Worlds - Multimedia

Posts: 5,525 | In race 10, at about the 57th min. Did Aus 3 foul Fra 9? Coming into the gate it looked as though FRA 9 had to bare away when AUS 3 had plenty of room to round. They were 10 min. behind the leaders. Does it matter?

Dont Worry just heard this from Hugh - getting redress for race 8 and 9 (Average Points from all races) as he had a collision with a press boat just after the start of race 7 and was slowly sinking - , he managed to finish race 7 with one hull full of water – noticed whilst watching the tracker that he has had a good race 10 so will be pushing hard for the title still !!!! Also Rob looks like he got a 1st too !!!! | | | Re: F18 Worlds - Multimedia

Posts: 297 | What's up with all the DNF's on juried race 9? Something funky there. The scoring and media reporting seem less than ideal to appease the curious amongst us, especially for an event of world class stature.

Wind died in 3rd (9th) race...those not finishing within 20 minutes after 1st boat (finisher) scored DNF

They were having a pretty good series, caught two bullets back to back then got nailed with a Black Flag then two DNF's. Talk about riding the emotional roller coaster!

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | The race committee normally has a few options if the fleet continues to be over early during the starts. If they have had several general recalls, they will start increasing the penalties of being over early. The most severe is the "black flag" where you are basically DSQ'd if you get caught over early. Others can make you have to round the ends of the line to restart instead of dipping the line or assessing a percentage penalty to your finish. For more information, checkout Rule 30 in the RRS. 30 STARTING PENALTIES 30.1 I Flag Rule If flag I has been displayed, and any part of a boat’s hull, crew or equipment is on the course side of the starting line or one of its extensions during the last minute before her starting signal, she shall thereafter sail from the course side across an extension to the prestart side before starting. 30.2 Z Flag Rule If flag Z has been displayed, no part of a boat’s hull, crew or equipment shall be in the triangle formed by the ends of the starting line and the first mark during the last minute before her starting signal. If a boat breaks this rule and is identified, she shall receive, without a hearing, a 20% Scoring Penalty calculated as stated in rule 44.3(c). She shall be penalized even if the race is restarted or resailed, but not if it is postponed or abandoned before the starting signal. If she is similarly identified during a subsequent attempt to start the same race, she shall receive an additional 20% Scoring Penalty. 30.3 Black Flag Rule If a black flag has been displayed, no part of a boat’s hull, crew or equipment shall be in the triangle formed by the ends of the starting line and the first mark during the last minute before her starting signal. If a boat breaks this rule and is identified, she shall be disqualified without a hearing, even if the race is restarted or resailed, but not if it is postponed or abandoned before the starting signal. If a general recall is signalled or the race is abandoned after the starting signal, the race committee shall display her sail number before the next warning signal for that race, and if the race is restarted or resailed she shall not sail in it. If she does so, her disqualification shall not be excluded in calculating her series score.
