Dave... my point is... One design works when the sailors with that flavor of boat show up and go race... great fun.

Major props to the US F18 sailors for spending the coin and making the worlds a big success..

One Design is not magic... just cause you say the blah blah regatta will have a OD start does not mean crap.
Your point about the need for phone calls and talking it up... year after year is the truth and it stinks.

My big boat was surprised that the class did not race... we missed out on the secret handshake that would have tipped us off.

The truth about one design is that a great worlds turnout does not mean that you can count on a reasonable regional schedule. I wish it were other.

In context of this thread.... You should only move forward with a new event IF you have a real grip on what a one design fleet wants and they commit to supporting the event... Then you can go get the details worked out.

We have the regattas we do because people enjoy them.

I agree that the schedule is pretty packed as is. So why are there so many? Do that many people enjoy hosting/orgnaizing regattas? If so, God bless them!

And I doubt the racing fleet would be interested unless it was "big-time", and there's no way to start a regatta at that level.

Terry has a point, though. If you were to sail a "winter series", it would be nice to have enough events to justify keeping a boat down here for a month or two... Maybe ya'll hotshots need to decide on some informal series so everyone's at the selected regattas and you can truly improve your skills rather than just sail around some buoys

Why not work with Craig at Performance? He has four races for the endurance series. He just added the two macho races this year.
Speaking of regattas, I tried several times to get Port Charlotte to open up an Open Class for their race, but he wouldn't do it. I told him he could score it Portsmith, but he wasn't in the least bit interested. So if you have a F-16 or F-18 you are in luck. However, if its a 19 or 20 foot boat, don't waste your time and stay home. Makes you feel warm and fussy that you are shut out of a big race close in.

I was asking the question to elicit more discussion on what Dave indicated: getting with your "group" and organizing which events to participate in.

If people go to a regatta, I would postulate most are there for the competition and the opportunity to improve their skills so that when they show up for their class worlds, NAs or whatever, they've got a better shot than they would have otherwise.

the distance/fun racing seems to have fallen out of favor somewhat, especially since there will always be a "rating beater" that will sweep the podium.

So, since we're trying to build skills and sail faster (why else would you spend so much cash and time getting a good boat and traveling?) why not just do what Ding said and hitch up to existing events and not worry about anything new?

And yes, I recall a slew of events that attendence has dwindled here in FL. MKL, Hogsbreath 100 (now Keys 100?), RTI Pensacola, Macho, even the Mug...
