Bill,
How in the world did you make those conclusions?
You cetainly didn't use the facts.

The Olympic Classes(from the US Sailing website):
The Europe - a 1960 design, "20,000 Europe sailors compete in local, regional, national and world cup competition."
The Finn - a 1949 design, "Over 12,000 of the boats have been built worldwide and at least 65 nations have active Finn fleets."
The 470 - a 1963 design, "competition by more than 30,000 sailors in 42 countries worldwide."
The 49er - the current evolution of a 1975 design, the only high tech boat in the Olympics
The Laser - a 1970 design, "With 150,000 Lasers sailing in 85 countries,", "1,000 worldwide regattas held each year by the Laser Class Association."
The Mistral - a windsurfer, who cares?
The Star - a 1910 design, "7,500 boats built over its 80 year history. Today, over 2,000 Stars are raced actively."
The Tornado - a 1966 design, "More than 1,300 Tornados are sailed worldwide."

Which boats are for "Serious Olympic minded sailors for the most part are going to enjoy this boat and the average sailor will not enjoy/appreciate this boat."?

As usual, you used a totally bogus conclusion to insult a popular and sucessful boat design, unlike yours, because of your perpetual, obsessive jealousy.
You again do a great disservice to the sport of sailing, just to boost your ego.

My choice would be to eliminate both the Finn (single-hander male) and the Europe (single-hander female), and replace them both with a single-hander multihull -- Multihull Women and Multihull Men.

Mary,

This makes sense to me. Multihulls are a lot more tolerant to people with less physical strength and smaller size, so they can be sailed by older people of any gender.

Paul Elvstrom sailing a Tornado with his daughter to 4th place in his last Olympic participation prooved that.

However, replacing the Finn is unlikely for two reasons:
-The president of ISAF is a Finn sailor.
-The top sailor in the class nowadays is British.

Replacing a monohull by a multihull is also difficult because there is no lobby in this direction. It makes perfect technical and political sense (as the tests in Quiberon and other technical data show beyond any doubt) but ISAF is not considering a move in this direction.

There is a lot of work to do in this area.

Cheers,
Luiz

PS: the number of sailing events in the olympic games tend to be reduced due to pressure from the IOC. Additions are unlikely.

Exactly right, Luiz, which is why all we can work toward is replacement of existing classes with multihulls.

Also, are you saying that Paul Henderson is a Finn sailor? He is going to be out as ISAF President this fall. And he has already said that he is going to be sailing a multihull after his departure as President. So that might help.

As far as Ben Ainslie winning the gold medal for Great Britain in the Finn Class, who knows what he is going to be doing four years from now. He tends to sail a lot of different boats, and he will probably be much in demand for big-paying jobs on big boats. I doubt if he has any strong loyalty to the Finn Class.
