I think that the growth and turnout for the F18 fleets in North America is great, thats why I was on the website in the first place. I wasnt being critical of the F18 class, or the the event, JUST the website. The pre-event coverage got me interested, so I was excited to follow along, but then was disappointed and voiced my opinion.
I was also interested to see how some of the rest of the fleet was doing, but again, nothing about the other 28 teams that are sailing this week. I'm not married to the HT, in fact I sold mine. I like the Nacra F18, its a good looking boat.
The event looks like fun, I wish I was there, then I wouldnt be sitting here bitching about the website.

Posts: 3,355 Key Largo, FL and Put-in-Bay, ... | This is cutting edge stuff and it will only get better. NOBODY has ever provided coverage of a catamaran (or any sailing) regatta even remotely close to what Brian and his crew are doing now...and it is going to get better through the week. NOt really true, Jake. We covered the Worrell 1000 similarly the last year. And I have to say, it is no Sunday picnic. We had two of us on the job working about 14 hours a day to get up 3 or 4 videos a day. We would get the starts each day, edit the video so it made sense and get it uploaded via satellite we set at each stop. There were several teams video taping, but they had no way of uploading -- only dial up service from the hotels and that did not work at all. Once we had the video up (usually about an hour after the start), we would pack up the satellite dish on a trailer and head for the next stop. Next stop, spend two hours dialing in the dish then rush to the beach for more video of the finish. Back to the RV to edit and upload. We didn't get the flack that I have seen in this thread because no one had ever done it before.., I guess! Anyway, I can tell you that these guys are trying to offer something that is hard to find -- coverage of a big event. I think everyone gets spoiled rotten. Give viewers one good coverage of an event and they want them all to be that way. Keep in mind that for most events you never even hear what went on for weeks or months later. Seems every regatta host wants to plug the heck out of their event to get folks to come, but then after the event is over.., RADIO SILENCE! Easy to figure out why.., usually everyone is so beat, they just want to hibernate. But, the best thing you can do to make your next year's regatta better is to report on what this year's did. One thing I've seen on ther sites that is kinda cool is to allow you to re-size the Video window to small, med and large depending in the connection speed as Broadband can vary from 0.5 to 10Mb.

Just Curious and so I have a few questions
What regattas have you run or participated in and What did you actually do to make that event happen?
How many people were on the team or teams?
Have you done any computer work that involves creating some content for the event and then getting it out there for the public to read or view?
Did you do more or less the following year? If you did not volunteer the following years.... why and who took over your functions?

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | What is the matter with all you guys? Is the summer heat getting to you or what? No kidding...I'm going back to sailing and with any luck, David and I won't have a camera onboard to capture me snagging the offset mark anchor line (should there ever be a next time). Brian posted some edited footage from the onboard camera we had today. P.S. The King Wetass Approves

Posts: 248 Colorado | capture me snagging the offset mark anchor line I was wondering if that's what was happing in that video. I thought I could see you say, "we hit the mark." Great video, overall, despite grabbing the mark. It explains why you had the low placing in that race. You seem to be doing pretty well against a very tough crowd. Keep it up and stay away from the anchor lines.

Posts: 1,037 Central California | Hey Jake, My hat goes off to you guys for being brave enough to film yourselves AND make it public--makes for some good entertainment and makes me feel a bit better about my own sailing ... like when I hit the mark with my tiller extension. Good luck and thanks for sharing.

Keep it up and stay away from the anchor lines. Well...I had forgotten that the camera was rolling through all of that until Brian said with a twinge of sarchasm "We got some GREAT footage" sometime later that evening. ;-) When we hit the mark, I think David was the first to say "Mark, Mark!" When he started to lift the boards while on his knees I think I said something like "board all the way" - not that he wasn't already going for it. It felt like an eternity before we got unstuck from the anchor line as we had all those boats hot on our heels. After looking back at the video, I was amazed at how quickly David reacted to the issue I created! We did our 360 shortly after that jibe and we did it without dousing the chute - it went pretty quickly but we did lose position on all those boats. Video like that, although publicly can be a bit embarassing , is really valuable to me to critique ourselves. Brian has a really neat setup with these cameras that can survive the craziest conditions.

I absolutely will call out any moron who critiques the work of volunteers. ESPECIALLY the ungrateful SOB's who probably havent run an event in years... or who feel that their ONE TIME effort once upon a time entitles them to a pass forever.
I think the web coverage of the F18's and the California Hobie events is great and want to thank the people who put the time in.... Tracie and her colleagues are doing a great job and now after all that work she may not be able to sail the rest of the event
Hopefully she wont have to read anymore little pissant comments from bozo's in the peanut gallery.

Posts: 393 Syracuse,N.Y | Are the anchor lines not weighted? We put PVC pipe filled with concrete and an eye bolt down the line about 5ft to keep the anchor lines straight down. It seems as though Jake should have sailed by that offset without catching the line.
