Hello all,

My great aunt and uncle just generously gave me a beautiful painting that depicts two big yachts in a race. They've had it for years, and don't much about the boats in the picture, they just liked it, as my great uncle enjoys sailing and boats.

It sticks in my mind that this painting may have depicted two 1930s America's Cup yachts, but I'm not sure that's correct.

Anyone have any guesses?

Thanks!

They don't look like Americas Cup boats to me... Schooners (2 masts) were used from 1851 through 1899 when the 90 ft sloops were introduced (Shamrock series from Peter Lipton). I believe the schooners were gaff rigged not pinheads as in this picture. The picture shows they have pilot houses aft and are flying asymetrical chutes directly from the bow-rail. The bow rail is a cruising style 2 rail. My guess is that they are artist depictions and not actual boats.

I'd have to agree with Tim. Here's a link showing all the AC winners.

With the way that the aft deck super structure is set up on both yachts, I am not sure that it is a painting of any "actual" yacht type! I think it may be more an artists "impression" of two yachts driving/racing, that is more a composite of his (the artists) impressions of what two yachts look like (artistic licence) but it is still a very nice painting from what can be seen in this photo.

Nice Painting! [Re: Darryl_Barrett] #54823

An excellent painting,...but it needs some black velvet and a black light.

I understand what the Black Velvet is for, but I have NO IDEA what to do with the black light!
