I hope to finalize a deal with Matt (this week or next) on a Blade. I'll get to the Gulf Coast more often and probably Spring Fever - nothing in concrete (kinda like my boat deal).

I'd like to put together an ad hoc F16 race calendar where we get as many F16s on the water as possible at the same events. Any input - likes, dislikes, already have one, etc.....?

Let me know how that Boat deal works out, I'm in for the same ride.
Hope that Alter Cup qualifier deal works out for Matt. I'm sure it will influence the US F-16 class in a large way, at least in terms of numbers of boats available.
Wonder how many boats that will be? Also if that will make getting a Blade harder or impossible to obtain when they're tooling up for a volume run like that?
Any any case I'll see you at Spring Fever, Who knows what I'll be sailing on by then, have had ~9 cats at Spring fever in 6 years, I generally deliver or pick up my new boat there annually. (Thanks to Nigel)
I May be sailing F-18 or F-16 next year as SF, if I'm between Performance Cats I'll have to be on my Hobie 16 what a Pain o Rama!

Every year during the spring there is a combined A-cat/F16 (1-up) event at Tampa, Florida. There have been 2 of these already. 2004 and 2005. This event should be the first to go on any F16 calender.

See here for more info

Prices have gone up some. Partially because improvements to the building process and partially due to it being more expensive to get components. The base boat is cheaper than the base I17R, but me thinks some of the options are must haves (carbon foils and cross bar, stamaster adjustment system, pentax sails and maybe the internal 12:1 downhaul). These options bring the cost to a little more than the base I17R...but, IMO, the base I17R needs some work (i.e. $$$).

Does anyone have any input on the kevlar hulls upgrade versus the standard build hulls? Not any lighter, but stiffer...is there concern the standard hulls are fragile and prone to denting (or why have the kevlar option)?

The F16 blade rules.
I should be able to make the Tradewinds and will probably sail 2 up.
Everyone just stop talking [censored] and sail.

Cool Seth - I think I will be 2 up also. But I think we should combine sloop and uni (if anyone is planning on it) and hopefully have a class.

Chuck,

There is a draft proposal floating around for the US (I think) class association rules that specificalyy brings up this topic, that the 2 set-up race on equal footing. I am not sure of the status of this at this point.

We brought this up with the Harken series organizers during the event this year and were told that it was simply up to us to submit a request to be scored together and it would be done. It was not automatic at this point becuase of them using the Portsmouth tables and there are 2 values listed for the F16. In the end it ended up being a moot topic as we had the qualifying number of boats at only 3 of the min 4 races requred to make a class for the series scoring.

We should have a better go at it this season though, especially if we can get that band wagon traitor (Just kidding) Jennifer to get her boat to a few of them.

Matt

I thought that was one of the biggest attractions of the F16 class: that you can sail one-up or two-up on an equal footing against each other, boat for boat.

Are you now saying that this is not the case?

It depends on what your definition of "is" is.

Equal footing is the intent of the design and has been proven to a valid condition. There are 2 numbers publised in the Portsmouth tables. Because of this race management has to be petitioned to group them togehter for scoring at US handicap events at least. This may be a different case other locations in the world.

A more formal class organization is in the works with bi-laws etc, but even if that was complete, We are going to have to make declaration of the distinction to the race committees for quite a while, as the concept seems to be too radical for the average Joe.

Not too radical if everyone agrees to sail by the same # for the race. Anybody that math challenged should stick with a HobieCat.
Where it would get to be sticky is when you have open fleet and the DPN numbers would be different.

Hi Tom,

re. Kevlar outer laminates versus Fibreglass, my understanding and experience with Mossies that have had this option for a while. Is that there is little difference in stiffness, what Kevlar offers is "Bullet Proof" hulls, ie. what would puncture a glass hull will only dent a Kevlar hull. Great if you get run into, which happened to me, just a dent to deal with not a break. Of course it is still possible to crack them but more difficult than glass.

My understanding is the stiffness of the hulls, is reliant on what else is used, for instance Carbon cloth in the laminates inside or out, reinforcing frames, bulk heads, stringers etc. Even the density of the foam core makes a difference, especialy to how easily the hull dent.

Of course I am no expert, just a back yard rebuilder of my own boats, many people made the statement of Kevlar Mossies being stiffer but that was not my experience, in fact if anything they seemed to dent easier. Of course if what I say is true Kevlar inner laminates make little sense at all.

In a nut shell Kevlar for strength, Carbon for stiffness, Fiberglass for allround properties and lower price.

Regards Gary.

If I am reading this thread correctly, I should order awards for the F16 as a class, or will you be in the open class again?

So far there is only one F16 registered -- Robi

But, from the thread it sounds like the following might be there:
Zuhl
Robi
Matt
Seth
Chuck

To register, go to here:
http://www.catsailor.com/registration/

If I am wrong, and there will not be a class, let me know.
Thanks,
Rick

Mr. White, as of Today Cary Palmer (Zuhl) does not own a F16. He will crew for me in Tradewinds.
