The first time we were in site of water she told me “don’t show me water unless I can get in it…LOL”

I think your wife and I would be great friends! I feel the same way!

A physically fit woman with a boat will have no trouble finding a male crew “if you want one”…do you have any idea how many men (who love water sports) are looking for a woman that is water sports oriented?

It took me 11 years of searching to find such a woman. The first time we were in site of water she told me “don’t show me water unless I can get in it…LOL” I knew she was the one right then and there… I married her two years later…it’s been heaven … the best thing I have ever done. Sunny, you will have no problem getting a crew…If you do have a problem then you need to move to Florida… because here… a good hearted woman… who loves the water... is more precious than diamonds.

Regards,
Seeker

No. Dont misunderstand me. I don't think I will sail solo because I can't find anyone to go with me. Everyone has been really giving of their time and knowledge. They are very generous. I am just aware of problems of being a girl on the boy's playground because of past experiences in the kayaking community. I intend to be respectful of that. Everyone here has been great.

"I am just aware of problems of being a girl on the boy's playground because of past experiences in the kayaking community. I intend to be respectful of that."

I know exactly where you’re coming from. Prior to our meeting, my wife and I were both divorced after long term marriages. She had to deal with the “friend boys” who were married men she would have as friends as opposed to a boy friend, and I had to deal with the “friend girls” wives of friends who I would sail/windsurf or kayak with. It’s a sticky situation, especially when you hit it off with some one “sports wise” and your “buds” wife or husband starts feeling threatened.

Best advice is keep an eye out for a single guy that you can share the experiences with…again I don’t know how it is in your area…but I can’t overstate how many great guys are out there looking for a woman that loves the water. My wife & I kayak together, sail together, and fish together (her favorite)…the best part is she thinks/reasons like a man!..LOL …at the same time she is all woman, she can primp with the best of them and I don’t know if you could hide that fact she is a woman with 3 rolls of duct tape…LOL…When you have the right person to share things with, every good experience is magnified…life is soooo easy…

Seeker

I was a fair kayaker when I met some guys from North American River Runners. These are some really good white water kayakers. One of the guys I was learning with nearly every weekend told his wife he was going kayaking with Sunny. (I went by that nickname all of the time then) Well, I guess she pictured a short guy with a bad hair cut that hung around with Cher. One day she happened to be at the bottom of a great decent when we came climbing out of the river laughing together. She was so hot that the river evaporated. He was not trying to be dishonest with her. It was just a misunderstanding but it was really bad for him for a while.

Wendy:

I don't know if they have anything around you like this, but I meet a lot of sailors here. http://www.clearlakeracing.com/
Both monohull and cat sailor. They take me out and I take them out. Race on monohulls sometimes too. Nice place to meet people.

Sailing is all good, so if you do have the opportunity to hitch a ride on a monohull, go for it. It will give you another perspective.

I have a chance to crew on a really pretty monohull for the Tommy Whiteside Regatta in May. I am looking forward to it.

However, don't tell me to go play on the nice monohulls with the other girls... Cats are too much fun. No changing my mind at this point. I will be doing this until I can't get my walker through the sand anymore.

It hadn't occurred to me to TELL you anything!

You can learn a lot from the monohull crowd, they have their own special skills. And, some of the bigger cats are beginning to hang with them. That's a special treat.

I could probably be talked into that. That is a HUGE spinnaker. But...where is the trapeze line?

LOL!

The owner belongs to my monohull club. This boat is of Norwegeian design, and built in Bulgaria. Ned, the owner, recruited sailors from http://www.cmcs-sail.org/, my local club, to help him sail here from Bulgaria. Also, I met DavidN, from this forum on that boat!

And that's why you should learn about monohulls!

It is difficult to be a woman in a male dominated sport. (kayaking was too) I am the only woman anywhere around me that is interested in cats. That is why I know that I will be sailing alone most of the time.

I know what you mean. I sail alone since my friends are too afraid of cat sailing lol. And the rest of the cat sailors (very few around here) are all males. But I dont really get lonley I mean I looooove sailing and Im too busy being overwhelemed with how much fun Im having that I dont really pay attention to anything else .

If you're up for a short drive, try the range in Sebastian. about 1/2 mile east of the I-95 interchange on the north side of the road (all the way back).

Air, pistol, and rifle out to 200 yds. I think it's $8.00 all you can shoot if memory serves. Really liked that place to evaluate my reloads.

Zee,
You understand exactly! The thing I liked about kayaking was pushing myself to do it well. I like the same thing about sailing. I like the mental and physical challenge. There is a balancing act, a sort of dance that you do with nature. That is the hook that gets me. It has very little to do with anyone else on the water.
On the river, there was nothing better than finding the perfect line through a class V rapid. I have just gotten a small sample of what that dance might be like in sailing and I loved it!

Wendy/Guys:

Sail everything you can. Mono, cat, tri - whatever. I am going to do sail testing with the local Quantum dealer. That should be fun and I hope to learn a LOT. Wendy did you find the 4.3 owners site OK?

Doug,
Yes, I did find the 4.3 site. Thanks.

I think that is good advice. David Mosley also told me that the best way to learn was to get on a lot of different boats with a lot of different skippers. I am sure every boat and skipper will teach me something useful. I will pay attention and learn as much as I can.

The best way to learn is to go out and do it yourself. Once you get the basics down, then start learning the different techniques. You want to be comfortable on the boat so you can free up your mind to concentrate on the finer points of sailing. And after a while you will be amazed at how naturally you are able to sail well and get the boat to do what you want.

Also, if you are a technical person it helps to learn about fluid flow over a foil (wing). This will help you understand why you trim the sails in such and such a way for certain conditions.

Wnedy is a natural on the helm. We started out in about 8-10, flying a hull single and then double trapped for a while, then it dropped for 30 minutes or so. I handed the tiller over to her and played the mainsheet. She never flinched, tea bagged me, or panicked even when the hull started to fly. She kept a smooth line and pinched up just enough when I had played the sheet out in the puffs. When she learns "why" it all works, she is going to be an awesome skipper.

The men were amazed, and said, "What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?" Matthew 8:27
