man I love thos paint schemes. I seriously think we need to adopt those to our boats. It calls more attention and makes the boat look a lot more appealing.

A lot more appealing than what? <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

You guys take everything over the edge around here. Everyone now a days has to explain everything.
Gina, I completley agree with what you said, DUH! But I have always loved nice pain schemes on sail boats, I dunno gives them an extra humph that people THAT DO NOT KNOW about sailing will like.
That is what I meant MARY, read outside the lines. Any none sailor sees our boats, specially in my case the Blade and I have gotten a few comments on the lines of "what is that?" I say its a sailboat, they say "oh nice" If were to apply some nice big bold decals with awesome graphics or lines, they would say "OH BAD butt!"
When I had my initial graphics (which were removed due to hurricane damage) even next door neighboors daughter which was three years old at the time, was saying "it looks so cool" That is what IM refering to. APPEALING to NON sailors. We all understand that a boat does not need any apeal.
Why do you all think that these massive boats have crazy graphics on the hulls etc etc? Makes them faster? NO. Its all about looks and marketing. Put two exactly the same boats next to eachother (Americas Cup for this matter) Show a non sailor which boat will he select, and he will clearly say the one with the graphics on it. WHY? because its all about calling attention and appeal to NON SAILORS,
DUH! folks read outside the lines. DAMN!

Eric, To get back to the mainsail shape on Alinghi, I think it is shaped much differently from what we are used to seeing on beach cats, because the draft is so far back. (Non-rotating mast? And more jib overlap?)
Also, what is the deal with all those wrinkles radiating upward toward the mast? Looks sort of like a stretchy plastic garbage bag.
And I don't know, but are they using inflatable battens on that sail? Whether yes or no, does that kind of batten work on beach-cat sails?

During the 1995 defence of the AC I was spending a lot of time with the sail designer of Prada. He is a friend and was helping with a main for an old little Americas Cup boat from the late fifties I had. (Australian, Attunga) In reseacing the possible shapes I noticed cats were starting to go square. I asked him if it was a good idea and what about a square top for Prada. He laughed it off and said there was too much engineering. I also asked about rotating masts..never was his reply. He had been out with Chris Dixon only days before who was running an Olympic Tornado campaign at the time and was stunnned by the power of rotation but... The fact is that beach cats have led the way in many performance arenas re monos.... they have always had a "thing' about us and that has cost them. At this point I must note how long it took cats to truely adopt gennies. I note a couple of the big monos are now indulging in rotation.. what next, two hulls : ) sailing at 15 knots and you can put your coffee down anywhere.

I think you'll find that the ACC crews/designers deliberately twist the masts using the off-centre running back-stays. How much they do it and in what conditions is another matter entirely.
The engineering related to square-top mains probably relates to the significantly greater compression loads in the mast from increased downhaul requirements.
Express yourself Robi, whatabout a flame job! : )... no better not, that would make you stand out... I forgot that would be bad and heaven forbid if you didn't win in a bright boat. : ( I know, old mans gersey greeyyyyy.
I agree with Mary about that "killer", "smash", "kickyouintheface" name thing though.

Warbird, been there done that already. This was a hobie I purchased for $500, totally refurbished it and sold it.
Me, personally I love graphics, the bigger and bolder, the better. That is why I got into the graphics industry. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Was this photo taken before or after the refurbishment ? If after did the buyer carry a white stick or turn up in a hot rod. Thinking about it where are the exhaust pipes.

That photo was taken after the refurbishment. Funny about the hot rod. The buyer bought it, because he actually liked the paint job. Mind you, I did this paint job. The buyer bought it for his 13 yr old grandson. The boy absolutley fell in love with the boat when he spotted the ad, so they bought it without hesitation.
The boat is now located somewhere in Central Florida USA.

love it! well done! After my comments about boat names I got to thinking about the psychology of racing to win and what can be used as motivation to concentrate and stay focused on that one thing. One man may cast himself as a prediter and another may not. What I do know that anything that gives the self belief an excellent racer must have is okay be it flame job or angry sounding name. I am looking for an image to illustrate what I mean.

I have snipped it down however I do agree with the entire post. It might be appropriate for another thread but it does have merrit.
IMHO the best way to grow our sport is to make it the "cool" thing to do. Funky graphics to make the boats more pleasing to the eye (and more photogenic) will certainly help our cause.
