Randy Smyth and crew, Keith Notary crossed the finish line in Virginia Beach, VA with only 23 minutes separating
them from second place finisher, Team Rudee's Restaurant. Smyth was taken immediately to the hospital where he
was admitted due to a severe infection in his knee. Smyth had been given intravenous antibiotics the night before
and the morning of the last leg of the race and had been told that he would have been hospitalized at Kill Devil
Hills, but for his promise to treating physicians there that he would immediatley seek emergency medical treatment
upon his finish in Virginia Beach. Due to concerns that Smyth could go into septic shock while out on the water
for the last leg, race organizer, Michael Worrell equipped Smyth and crew with a cellular telephone. Fortunately,
Smyth had smooth sailing to the finish.
Smyth's injury began just prior to the start of the race in Fort Lauderdale where he received a rope burn from
the spinnaker line while preparing for the race. Smyth sailed the first leg of the race with shorts on which left
the cut open and exposed to the sea water. Although the cut seemingly had healed up over the past two weeks, an
infection developed and went unnoticed by Smyth until he reached Cape Hatteras. By the time Smyth reached Kill
Devil Hills, he knew that he had a serious injury when he experienced immobility of the knee joint and quite a
bit of pain and swelling. Physicians at the Outer Banks Medical clinic had been following the race and knew that
Smyth would sail the last leg despite their advise that he should be admitted to the hospital for intensive antibiotic
treatment.
At present Smyth is in the Virginia Beach General Hospital where he is receiving aggressive antibiotic treatment
intraveneously. His treating physician has advised Smyth that it could take as long as 3 to 4 days or as soon as
1 day for the infection to begin subsiding. What is worrisome is that the infection appears to be in the knee joint.
This could cause Smyth to end up with arthritus of the knee joint and associated problems. Also a concern is that
the infection will progress and lead to blood poisoning.
Smyth is hoping that his physician will give him the ok to attend the awards ceremony for a few hours that is
scheduled for later this afternoon. That decision will depend upon how well, if at all, the infection responds
to the present course of treatment.
Despite this personal and professional set back, Smyth remains in good spirits and says that he will be back
out on the water again as soon as possible.
Instead of a Winner's Circle, Randy Smyth attended the awards festivites in a Winner's Wheechair. Here is pictured
with his wife, Paula, and baby daughter, Nicole. |
Delay in Posting Results, Stories and Pictures
By Paula Smyth
My apologies to all of Catamaran Sailor's Website readers and Rick White. My daughter Nicole and I travelled with
Rick up the coast to follow the race. Rick was called away to attend another function at Cape Hatteras. At that
point I took over posting stories, pictures and race results on the Catamaran Sailor website. Having no prior experience
with websites, I took lots of notes from Rick and fenagled my way through the next few days. After some trials
and errors which resulted in incorrect links or file transfers, I was finally able to get the hang of it.
As you all know, my husband, Randy Smyth, became ill with an infection in his knee (clinical term is cellulitus)
which required emergency medical attention at Kill Devil Hills and hospitalization upon reaching the finish at
Virginia Beach. At that point, my number one priority became taking care of Randy as I'm sure that you all understand.
Accordingly, I was unable to timely post anything on the website. I am an avid follower of both this website and
Catamaran Sailor magazine and know how much readers appreciate and value the sailing stories, photos and race results
that Rick and Mary provide us with. This is why I felt is necessary to provide you all with an explanation of why
there has been a delay in the postings. Rick White is simply the best when it comes to maintaining this website
and I'm sure that as soon as I can get his equipment back to him, all future postings will resume on an hour by
hour basis so far as updates. My thanks to Rick for giving me this opportunity to contribute to, and be a part
of, such an incredibly awsome news medium!
Smyth Given 2 Hour Furlough from Hospital to Attend Award's Ceremony
Randy Smyth was allowed to leave the hospital for two hours to attend the award's ceremony where he and crew, Keith
Notary, were honored for their first place finish sailing as Team Chick's Beach. Smyth was wheelchair bound, but
even that did not seem to bother him as he enthusiastically talked with fellow sailors and ceremony guests. Immediately
following his trophy acceptance, Smyth was wheeled off for his return to the hospital. Smyth has arranged with
his home town physician to be transferred to the hospital where Smyth resides in Fort Walton Beach, Florida late
Sunday afternoon. Smyth will remain hospitalized until Doctors determine that his present course of treatment is
actually fighting the infection and he is able tograduate to oral antibiotics which are not as strong as the intraveneous
ones he is presently receiving.
