That's just not true. Consider Gates and Jobs, neither was wealthy when they started out. Iirc, IBM came to Gates for help with their pc and they still couldn't build a competitive system.
IBM built the entire system, Gates (et al)only created the operating system (DOS = DUMB operating system)
Gates was brilliant and lucky that IBM went along with it, and they (MS) kept the licensing rights.... and leased it to IBM
