Ok, each boat has a rating. This rating determines a handicap. How? Say you have a boat with a rating of 60 and another with 70. Does this mean that for every minute of the race the first boat has to beat the second boat by ten seconds? 20 min race= 3min 20 sec ahead of the second boat or better to win? I have know clue how this works.

I'm boatless.

that's pretty much it.

An important fact to understand is how the ratings are derived. In the case of Portsmouth (generally the only system used for catamarans in the US), the numbers are achieved based on race committee's sending in the results of the racing including elapsed times and wind strengths. Other systems use boat parameters (width, sail area, daggerboard type, etc.) and yet other systems use a combination of the two....but I'm not going into that debate.

The formula used for Portsmouth ratings is as follows. More can be found at the US Sailing Website .

CT = ET/HC x 100
Where:

CT = corrected time
ET = elapsed time
HC = D-PN or wind handicap number
MF = modification factor
Score race based on shortest corrected time = 1st, etc.

One final point to Jakes description

You want to look at the column Elapsed time to win (or ETW in sailwave) as opposed to the corrected time.

Corrected time is that magical place where all boats of different sizes are racing in virtual space...

So...
A time on time Handicap must be converted back to real time on your boat to make any sense to you.

So the ETW is the actual time in seconds that you would need to save on the race course to win that particular race... This time is directly related to... Slow tacks... time spent going the wrong way...lousy starts, flubbed mark roundings....
and all other aspects of racing other then boat speed...

Most people who complain about ratings change their tune when they count up the time lost in mistakes they know they made out there compared to first place boat.

The only exception here being the people who complain that their USPN ratings are too slow for the boat !

And remarkably enough such a group really does exist and has existed for 6 years now ! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
