I posted to the old forum last week, but it seems be suffering a long slow death. anyway, my jib sail has a spot on the luff where the cloth is starting to tear. there is not a tear yet, but i can see an area about an inch long that has torn fibers and looks like it will be a tear in a week or so. is there something i can apply to the cloth to prevent it from tearing, or do i need to have a sailmaker sew in a patch?

by the way, the cloth is white and i would like the repair to match.

thanks

Dave,
Go buy a roll of stickyback Dacron repair tape in a 4" wide roll. This will take care of most of you sail repair needs. Put a layer on each side of the affected area. This should be a strong repair and should last the life of the sail.

Sail tape works well but, sometimes you can't or don't want to use it. Wind Shear, the adhesive used to repair mylar sails also works for this.

Spread a very small amount on the area you want to repair, cover it with wax paper, and rub it FLAT with something heavy and smooth (like an iron). Let it dry and peel the paper off.

You might want to practice on a scrap first. My first attempt looked pretty bad
