Black Ledge Distance Race

It is August in Miami and it is hot and sticky. That means it is time for the annual Black Ledge Distance Race. Every August we contest this same distance race in Biscayne Bay. This will be the 37 annual running of this race. The race will be Saturday, August 18. The race will originate from the Rickenbacker Causeway. The crew meeting will be at 10:30 as usual. Bring a timing device (stopwatch) to record your own elapsed time.

This is a race in Biscayne Bay. The race is named after the Black Ledge shoal which will be the southern terminus of the race. The shoal and associated marker are approximately 9 nautical miles SSW from the causeway. The marker is about 1 nautical mile west of the center line of the Intracoastal Waterway. The marker has the #2 on it and it does have a red light on it. You do not need a GPS to find this mark. You can use land based references to locate it. I have been doing this race for 27 years and have always found it without a GPS. However, this is the one CABB race where it is nice to have a GPS, especially if you are not familiar with the location. So if you have a GPS, bring it to this race. The coordinates for the mark are N 25' 35.97, W 80' 14.19. There will also be at least one other mark designated as a turning mark. We usually use marker #21 near Biscayne Flats. If you do not have a GPS, you can always follow one of the boats that will be carrying a GPS. The final determination of turning marks will be made at the beach depending on the prevailing wind conditions at the time. I hope to see you there.

Congratulations for Brian Lambert and CABB member Jamie Livingston on winning the 2007 Hobie 20 North American Championships. The championship regatta was held from July 30 to August 3 in San Francisco Bay off of Alameda. Brian and Jamie had almost all top five finishes and ended up a whopping 17 points ahead of the second place boat. Congratulation on a job well done.

Also in attendance at the same venue was Miami cat sailors Sarah and Lizzie Newberry sailing in the Hobie 16 North American Championship. Local sailors Mike Siau and Julian Roots finished a very respectable 18 out of 45 boats in the Hobie 16 championship. If you would like to see all the results, stories, and hundreds of pictures, you can check it out at http://www.hca-na.org/. I believe the following is a picture of Brian and Jamie showing their championship style. http://www.hobienorthamericans.com/photo/8.3/8.3.html
