i have just bourght a windrush 14 with the intention of putting as big a sale on it as possible

i am working on the principal that if a hobie 14 can have a formula 14 rig, with very little bow boancy, no t-foils, then a 14 footer with these could take a bigger sail, the limitations to me seam to boil down to how big a main sail you can have without the boat wanting to spin round backwards, i realise you could have a bigger sail than the formula 14 or the nacra 14 square if you have a mast head jib (or at least flying of the top of the present mast) 23'6 before i extend it, obviously if you have a taller narrower main you can have more sail, but maybe a bit more of a stubby one might be sensible for pitching moments, so say you have a 50'square or 4.7m squ jib how big could your main be? are there any drawings of rigs such as this? on monos or cats? i would luv to see some

I have sailed the Windy14 and the Nacra 14sq a lot.
I think that following the H14 development and the Maricat style would be the most sensible thing to do.
Check the two attachaments...that Maricat sail isssswweeeeeet for for an older boat.
The Windy is a boat challenged by it's date of design and simply adding cloth might not help.
Way more mast rake, square top and mast head reacher would be a good bet.

Taking great care to lighten the rig would do the boat a lot of favours as it has very little boynacy and freeboard.I am clear that if you got the Nacra sail and mast that it would just overwelm the Windy.

I also have this as reference.
It is an Esprit 13' 6" with a buffalo main and unidentified jib. The Buffalo has a bigger rig than the Esprit and the jib is coming right back poast the mast. I think this cheap power upgrade might be more successful with a Nacra style bridle foil which would bring the jib forward and lower and create a better slot.
As it sits I am sure it would backwind the main.

You can definitely overpower the H14 type boats as you pointed out -- not much freeboard or buoyancy.
At the Spring Fever two years ago we had an F14 class, with two or three H14s and my Wave.
When the wind picked up, they were a bit faster with their Hooters, but both H14s in the class capsized. No problem with the Wave with Hooter.., and I could have added a lot more sail area.
Haven't had much time to do so, but I had plans for a huge Hooter, fairly large self-tacking jib.
Every time I used it, it was screaming, but broke something every time (bow sprit exploded from the load one time). Still on the drawing board.

Rick, if someone wanted to hooter-ize a Wave, what would your current recommendation be?

Well, the one I am presently using is tried and has proven faultless. No breakage, good speed upwind and off the wind. When first playing with it I was fearful of having the halyard turning block to high. But, after test, found when it was lower, the speed was better, but would not live up to the handicap hit.
So, I finally went masthead and it made all the difference in the world. The rig in the following link is what I presently recommend.

As I said, If I could get the longer pole to work with the self-tacking jib, it would be really hot.
For about a half mile I was staying with a Hobie 20.

hi, thanks for the advice especialy about the hooters, but i'm hopeing that a t-foil rudder system will allow me to max out the the sail area without constantly pitch polling, douse anyone know if there is somone on the sight who might fancy working on a sailplan with me?????

ok so here goes.... i sail it uni upwind mostly... only in light wind do i sail with the hooter up wind otherwise you have to foot off... but downwind it is a screamer... make sure you don't have the hooter cleated... a good set of oxen blocks work the best.... but i use a F18 set up with 4 blocks... i was at the spring fever 2 years ago with dan and our buddy chris.... chris did't have much time on teh F14 and hes alittle big for the 14 so he kept flipping..... i flipped a few times but one was cause a 16 pushed me down..... in big wind it can be tricky jibeing.... but just take your time... and its all good... but look out for the pitch pole on teh jibe... i love the boat and will never give it up... i have a supercat 19 and i still go out on the weekdays by myself with the 14... its too easy to rig by myself..... ohh and all this stuff about T-foils... it just seems like it too much.... simplier is sometimes better

I am still waiting for a reply from Darryl about getting T-foils for my projects but he said while my aipan is a candidate, maybe the 14sq is not.
He is cetainly the man when it comes to this tech.
If you are over-powering I thing Ts are a must....so long as they suit the hull shape.
Like having anti-tramp bars on street rods.

Our T foil rudder system WILL fit the transom of the new Blade but, as we have found out, the transom of the Taipan is just a little "short" to fit the rudder stocks on without some moulding modifications to the moulded in gudgeon position of the stocks.
