Hi all
Please dont allscream at me BUT.

Where I sail recreationally with my A Cat is quite shallow
and there are many sandbanks.

I am wanting to make some shallow water rudders Just wondering if anyone has shortened their rudders and are there any issues in doing that?

Any ideas on length etc would be appreciated.

I will keep my deep rudders for racing which in the channels so the shallow one will be for social blasting.

Centrboards wont be a problem as I can set these to
sit just below the boat by about 10 to 12 inches ( guessing here )

Any ideas ??

Hi Gogecko

What rudders have you got now? are they the kick up type with the fibreglass rod?

How shallow is shallow? I don't think I'd want to sail a A cat with a foot or so clearance, a hobie 16 or something i'd be more comfortable. Just sounds expensive with a A class.

Shorter boards and rudders are going to effect the amount of control you have, harder to steer, be a bugger of a thing to tack, won't point etc...

But I suppose if your just cruising around you could try it out, make them a bit wider and shorter, how short? that depends on what your dealing with I guess.

Regards

If you are going to set your daggers at 10-12", you want your rudders at 12-14" so that they drag bottom 1st to give you warning to lift the daggers before your ram them back in the slot and muller the hulls!
or get a beach cat
