I have a 03 CC. My biggest worry is sheeting in on a beam reach in 20+ <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Tom, what is the deal with "cap shrouds"? I have heard the term used when talking about the F27, when the asymetric spin is added. Are they kind of like a running backstay on a monohull? Do you adjust them with every tack? Is there a weakness with the F27 masts that requires them? And does the F27 mast rotate? What would happen if you put the F28 carbon mast (and sails) on a F27? Would you need cap shrouds?

Hi Tim,

The 27 guys can prolly answer this better, but I will try.

The cap shrouds are the standing rigging that holds up the mast. They are tensioned with hi-field levers and on the 27 there is a block & tackle arrangement that gives you your rig tension. Most 27's are non rotating rigs. When I have sails 27's the cap shroud tension was set by sailing to weather taking the slack out of the lee ward, tacking doing the same, making sure the rig is not falling off to leeward.

27's came originally with a single spreade rig. There were some problems with that and many people upgraded to a double spreader rig, a fairly simple retrofit.

You can see the capsshoud and b & t in the pic

Hope this helps

Tom

Thanks Tom. I'm hoping to one day buy a F...something...to cruise with the occasionl buoy race. The 27's, since they are the oldest, seem to be the most affordable and offer the most interior sleeping space. While I would prefer the 31, just not enough cheap used ones available today.
