I broke my thumb 2.5 weeks ago. Dr. used 2 pins to reset the fracture. The hand will be in a cast for about 6 weeks total. I understand that rehabilitation to regain mobility will be somewhat painful and take several weeks or months.

My question is, how long before I can sail again? I had planned on attending a F18 event about 15 days after the pins come out. The Dr. said I would not do any damage by sailing. If I could withstand the pain and if I had enough mobility to complete tasks I would be fine, but he didn't have a good idea of what sailing requires and couldn't tell me whether I would be up to it at that point.

Anybody have experience with how long it takes to get back to sailing after an injury like this? Maybe how difficult it is to sail with an injury to the thumb, like a sprain or something? Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Eric

I got beat up by a tree a few years and turned one wrist into what the doc described as Rice Krispies. I had a fixator on for six weeks followed by a cast for four more.

Once the cast was off I started doing PT once a week for ten weeks. The PT was to both strengthen my hand and break the tendon that had bonded to the break loose. It was about six weeks in when the tendon finally broke loose. There was a loud snap when it happened.

A thumb may not be as bad. Once the pins are out do the PT. Things will probably come back faster if you do more then just the PT sessions. It will hurt like a sonofabitch. Pain is good!!

Good luck!

Eric:

If this was an intra-articular fracture of the metacarpal bone that required an open reduction with pinning? Then I'll give you the same recomendation my "Sawbones" gave me - Chill Out!!!!

But then again, this was about 20 years ago, and much has changed with the fact that with many orthopedic injuries that want you up and running ASAP to get the healing process going.

Good luck

It is called a Bennett's fracture. It is a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal, involving the first carpometacarpal joint. They did closed reduction and percutaneous placement of K-wires.

G'day Eric I did a bad dislocation of the small bones in my wrist 6 mths ago skiing, the physio told me to do what I could, and I certainly couldn't do all of the exercises she wanted me to due to the pain. I used a good wrist brace for the start of the season and had to develop a way to roll onto the boat after capsise. I see your biggest problems are going to be snapping the sheet out of the cleat, pulling the sheet, some holding of the tiller. Then righting the boat can you climb back on using your elbows. If you can do that the pain will be what really tells you to stop so dont take pain killers before you go out and then sailing will be just more physio.
just my thoughts regards

Dude, I had my right thumb almost completely severed (smashed)off. It was fixed with a pin running the full lenght of both bones and a button sewn on the fingernail to re-attach the tendons. After 4 weeks I removed the cast myself as well as the stiches, button and the pin. Yes I did the pin my self with a pair of needle nosed pliers (I still have the pliers). It hurt like a mofo for the next few months. Do what you can tolerate as far as pain goes. I actually learned to mentally channel the pain into a good feeling. It takes practice. In hindsight, I should have let a doctor do it.

Did you describe the KIND of sailing you do? Most people think of people sitting in a cushy **** sipping tea with their pinkies raised when you first say "I sail boats".
