Hi all,

I guess how you feel about capsizing depends on how and where you started sailing, I started in junior scows, no **** to fill up. Capsizing was something you did for fun and to cool off. Hell half the time on a hot day we did more swimming than sailing, helped that the water was warm too, cooling pond for a power station.

But it happens to the best catsailors when they push the envelope. Recently spoke to newly crowned world champ, who flew straight from New Zealand to Spain to do some sailing on Extreme 40 and capsized it.

Well I'm waiting patiently to see the photos and results. I'm quite curious to see how Gill and Kathleen compared to you US teams as they performed really well at Zandvoort. Were the results posted in true Gulfport fashion i.e (see attachment)

Actually he was a passenger at the time (his words not mine), and he was there to coach Spithill and the Oracle guys on the finer points of sailing cats. Could be said that it was actually part of the sailing lesson/learning curve. Better to do it on the 40ft cat rather than the 90ft cat in the DOG match.

I started on very stable relatively large open boats in my sailing carrier; but have sailed 49-er and laser skiffs/dinghies in addition to cats. If you think a cat easily tips then try a 49-er skiff !

Anyone who hasn't flipped it at least once in a while isn't learning to become better or not seriously racing. This is especially try for any singlehanded sailor on a F16. There is absolutely nobody who is born with the right skills to handle that setup right from the very first second.

If I wanted training wheels then I would have bought a Hobie Wave.

All great names have flipped and will flip again. There is a great picture of Bundock and Forbes flying of a pitchpoling Tornado. Randy flipped an Extreme 40 not too long ago and Booth violantly pitchpoled a Hobie Fox in Round Texel a few years back. Even the current F16 Global Challenge Champion flipped his boat in last years event. And these guys are a shitload better sailors then we all are.

Nobody is racing these sailcraft because it is easy or because you can't flip them. The awareness that things can go upside down is part of the exitement. And we all know it.

I have thought for a long time, that as a group, there is too much adrenalin seeking under spin. Over about 15 knots the goal should be more about vmg than speed.

In the second race on Saturday, Arie and I picked up four boats, all capsized in a nice neat row, by sailing conservatively. However, that will not show in the standings because I forgot to go to "A" mark a third time!

The last time I flipped my boat when sailing 2-up was 2005.

It was alot more recently when sailing 1-up.

We flipped once, that was after the spin was already in the bag. I was concentrating on making a good rounding and totally ignored the gusty conditions. Bad move.

Now that I'm back home in Maryland, I'd like to say that this past weekend was very enjoyable. Thanks to everyone at the Gulfport Yacht Club for your hospitality, particularly Gordon, who hosted the registration party and "Double T" for arranging for Ed and I to get a hot shower before our 15-hour trip back home. It was a real treat for me to meet and compete with all the characters who routinely post on this site. We have a really interesting, diverse group of sailors in the F16 class, as well as the Acat class. I was surprised at the age spread of all the participants in both fleets. It appears that the catamaran community is an aging population. It was good to see some young teams there—only hope that we can continue to attract more.

For me, the sailing conditions were excellent. Saturday gave me an opportunity to sail 2-up with my friend Ed and gain some experience with this boat in heavy air. Need to work on technique to keep the boat upright going down wind—we flipped her in two different races in the same situation. Sunday gave us an opportunity to sail single—our original intent—in light air building to perfect conditions in the last race.

Congratulations to all the top finishers in both fleets. Does anyone know where we can find the final results of the F16 and Acat fleets? Ed and I were working all afternoon Sunday on getting our double-stack together for the trip back and missed the closing.

Thanks,
John

Not I, but I have sent out a search party.

Pictures are starting to come in little by little. If you see something you like I say you purchase the image. Support him as much as you can.

I think Bret Moss was first A cat, followed Ben Moon and Woody Cope (or vise-versa). Don't quote me though.

In the "first boat not to finish" category, I heard virtually all the A cats forgot the 3rd trip to weather in race 2. So I don't feel so all alone.

Pics look great, makes me want to do it all over again.
