I remember seeing crew on the Worrell 1000 wearing special life vests with attachments. Some of the attachments looked like personal strobe lights and other odds and ends.

What were the other odds and ends? Are these custom made or are they sold in stores?

Thanks in advance,

Russell Weaver

Hi Russ,
The guys that sailed it know better than me, but I noticed the sailors carrying a strobe, an EPIRB, a Camel back? (a water sack with a straw). All can be had at West Marine.
Chuck

At least one photo of Steve Piche, of PI Sailing, clearly shows a PowerBar duct-taped to his dry suit.
http://www.worrell1000.com/archives2001/may01pics_leg05.html
He even mentions it in one of his race updates at his website , but I couldn't find the exact one.
http://www.pisailing.com/

Jim Casto

Hi Russell -

Yep, all that stuff is available at most marine supply stores - if you take a look at the Worrell 1000 rules (www.Worrell1000.com), there is a list of the safety equipment required to be on the body of each competitor. Some teams simply duct-tape the stuff to themselves, while other teams go all out and have additional pockets and straps sewn on their life vests and dry suits.

Its interesting to note that none of the safety equipment was found in the surf at Jensen Beach - good tape and velcro, or did everyone have the whistle in their mouth, the EPIRB in one hand, and the flare gun in the other? Hmmm...

Regards -

John
2001 Tommy Bahama Sailing Team

Check out biking catalogues for strobe lights and Camel Backs first - lot cheaper.

www.nashbar.com or www.performance.com.

their clothes are also a lot cheaper and more durable.

s.
