Getting ready to buy a classis cat in the 16-18 foot range.

Here in Phoenix, there is a strong Hobie 16 fleet. I enjoy one design racing, so I thinking a Hobie 16 is the way to go. But there is also lots of portsmouth activity as well.

I am a Laser and keelboat racer and have never owned a cat. Just sailed on them a few times.

My question on the H-16:

1: They always look so pitchy when sailing. Do you notice this while under way? They look like they pitchpole and back flip easy. Also, is this boat good in heavy seas compared to other brands?...Or is it survival mode?

2: The low side hull always looks like it is buried and dragging the tiller....like lack of bouyancy. It seems like this would slow it down. Is this a defect?...Or no problem.

3: How fast is the H-16 compared to Prindle 16, and Nacra 5.0 or 5.2? Portsmouth ratings say it is faster, this true?

4: What is the optimal crew weight range?

If one design is your desire, H16 is a great choice. You will have tons of folks that can help you be fast.

1. Yes, it can pitch when pushed on a reach- your crew needs to be on the job and playing the jib to keep the bow up. Both of you need to be on the back corner in a breeze.

2. depends on total crew weight. The boat is over-endowed w/ sail area vs. displacement which is one reason it is so much fun!

3. The DPN number reflects the thousands of excellent sailors optimizing the boat over many years. P16 is basically as fast and has more bouyancy in the bows. The 5.2 is faster in my experience.

4. ~300lbs, w 285 minimum.


It has been a long time since I raced so be sure to get info from current racers.

I should add...I will also be doing alot of beach launching and sailing thru surf. I am thinking the H-16 is best for that because of low weight and no boards? Or does it matter?

Brings up another question. I see that racers rake the mast back to move the CE closer to the rudders. Should the H-16 have had centerboards? Or do the asymetrical hulls work fine? Do H-16s point lower than centerboard cats?

H16 is meant for surf. It does not point as well as a board boat but who cares in one design? Rake the mast back as far as you can, leaving enough room for mainsheet blocks to work.

OK, I bought a 1976 Hobie 16. It's in really good condition for a 1976, awesome price. We will sail this for a while then add a 21st century cat later.
