Hi all,
As I mentioned in another thread my wife and I had a Hobie 18 Magnum in the mid to late 80's and are thinking of getting back into Hobies. We bought our Magnum new but would now obviously have to buy a boat that's 20+ years old. So here's my question:

Is there some review of the Hobie 18s from that era that tells one what weaknesses have become apparent on the boat and/or known issues to watch out for? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Well I found a TheMightyHobie18 Magnum for sale in Phx AZ and bought it. We're meeting the fellow half way in Holbrook AZ on Sat. Looking forward to getting back to some simplified sailing (relative to sailing/racing F-boats).

I'm sure I'll have more questions about restoration in the next couple weeks.

Thanks but even when we were fairly competitive at the regional level we got our clocks cleaned when we tried to win a spot at the TheMightyHobie18 nationals in the qualifying rounds in Fort Walton Beach FL. Might come over and watch though. When is it?

November at lake Havasu. www.havamega.com I'm goingjust to do the event and place of finish doesn't matter. There are close to 60 boats registered about 15 in 18's and 18 tigers. And a year out almost. The 40th was so much fun i commited to this one right away.
Hope to see you on the water.

Thanks Rich.

I just spent the day disassembling the boat and cleaning her up. I've got the tramps off the hull & wings (all 3 tramps are pretty shot) but haven't even had a chance to look at the main yet.

It snowed a couple inches here this a.m. then cleared up so it was cold working out there eek I needed to get it cleaned up today so we can get it in the garage in another day or two. Then I'm going to compound, polish, and wax the decks and polish & wax the hulls.

Our CC&Rs where we live are strict about not leaving boats, RVs, etc... out in the driveways or street. A couple days, OK but no extended outside storage.

Good to hear your getting her ready to go for next year. If you have any questions Feel free to contact me either here or on e mail. ( [email protected] ) The most important thing is as you go through the clean up make sure youe stabding rigging is in good condition. pay carefull attention to the anchor bolts for the shrouds. I had one break in San Fran bay and the repair were expensive considering how cheap a shroud anchor is. What year is your boat and do you have the shroud plates, and x bar plates?
If not you may want to add them too.
Rich
