Posts: 833 St. Louis, MO, | It was a blowin' at my local lake this weekend. 25-30mph. 45mph reported gusts. I didn't break anything as I just looked at my cat on it's trailer and decided it was better off right where it was.
One guy tried to go out on his laser but didn't get but about 20feet before he rolled it. He tried a few more times with the same result. I helped him pull it out and put it away. Again no breakage on the laser.

Posts: 3,114 BANNED | I went out on a professor's 37.5 hunter legend this past weekend on the Rappahanock (sp) river in Virginia. It was blowing 10-15 all day, and we were giving her a shakedown before our weeklong trip around the bay (Baltimore, eastern shore [my home] etc). We decided to hit the bridge and back, about a 3 mile jaunt round trip.
We were on the way back, and just outside the harbor the wind picked up to about 20 so we decided to stay out and take advantage of the improved wind conditions despite the degrading rain conditions (washed the dust off the foulies). We were on a nice beam reach under mainsail alone when all of a sudden, the boat spun on its keel. The rail was in the water and we were grabbing life lines. When the boat settled out into the wind, back behind the bridge, a very visible water spout had formed. The captain and I were the only ones on board that knew what we were doing, so while I dropped the mainsail, capt got the engine started and we overheated the diesel getting back into the protected harbor.
So we didn't break anything luckily. The new sail held up as did the stick.
If I keep telling these stories you people are going to start thinking I've got a growing nose, but its all the truth, I promise. | | | Re: What did you break this weekend?

Posts: 217 | While rigging, I noticed the rope on one of my trapeze hooks was wearing through. So I replaced it with a fresh bit of line. Unfortunately, I must not have rigged it correctly, I think I put the plastic figure 8 thingie on the same side as the trap ring. First time I jumped out on the wire, it held for about 1 second, then the knot holding the rope to the bungee pulled through the pulley, and I went swimming. I had both the stick & the mainsheet in my hand, but I did not let go of the stick soon enough.
Total damage : Hot stick Trapeze hook Trapeze figure 8 thing 18" line. Large bruise on bicep. Minor bruise to ego.

Posts: 15 Scotland | I sailed last Wednesday night with my club guys in Scotland. When we went out, we had around 15-20mph wind and it was a bit choppy. Additionally, we had very strong tide currents (up to 6m here). I am not a top sailor, so I was already quite busy but still enjoyed it. After about 10 mins in the race, the wind picked up incredibily and we had gusts up to 50mph!! Some of the larger yachtes that participated in the race were lying leeward for up to a minute with their sails in the water. We finally managed to jibe and head back for the marina (man was I scared!). Things didn't get any easier. Our marina is very narrow and wind came directly from slipway with 25mph+, so had to tack back in harbour. Finally managed to get back without breaking anything . Just the jib got a bit battered. phil

Posts: 1,669 Melbourne, Australia | Over Easter we sailed the Sail Sydney Olympic Class Regatta over 4 days. On day 1, we sailed in winds offically recorded at upto 35 knots. Was thrown over when exiting a jibe and also did not let go of the hotstick quick enough...... Try and find a shop open on Good Friday to buy a repacement...... Finished up the regatta with a curtain rod as a tiller extension. We destroyed the headboard on our new main sail and sheered the main halyard swivel lock (3rd unit now).... Use alot of downhaul in 35 knots. Also broke a batten in the jib, lost a centre board strip, put a 2 foot long split in the middle of the trapalene and began to tear out the self tacking jib track. We were also sailing with the mainsheet lower block tied to the centre of the rear beam because we shattered the traveller car a few weeks before (on back order) $$$$$ Boat now comes of the water for a few weeks for some much needed repairs. | | | Re: What did you break this weekend?

Posts: 14 Central Coast of California | I lent my boat to my one usual crewmember and a mutual friend. Well they went out in a small craft advisory, (nice to know they checked before they went out...). They have some apocryphal stories about lauching through the surf and not having the tiller extension on, later putting it one underway after one swam back to get it, turtling twice and the only casualty was one aqua sock. Lucky for me!

Posts: 30 SF. Bay Area | After the Treesmacker up at Black Butte Lake, just dashing around in the sun and the rain(!?!) I had my jib snap shackle explode! Guess I'll upgrade to something really overkill. Also the new jib furling line lasted exactly 2 days. I guess I need a recomendation for a better line!
