Posts: 5,558 Key Largo, FL & Put-in-Bay, OH... | This is the 25th year for this two-day, 110-mile race around Key Largo. There are 20 boats in a mixed group of cats. I will try to put the competitor list in this thread if I can figure out how to do it. Most are launching from the Caribbean Club, but four from Gilbert's. Start is at 9 a.m. in Barnes Sound, at the north end of Jewfish Creek, as always.

Posts: 5,558 Key Largo, FL & Put-in-Bay, OH... | The race started at 9:20, and two boats are out of the game right off the bat. Leah and Dave White are out with their Nacra 6.0. It was a close reach from the start to Card Sound Bridge, so Dave jumped out on the trapeze, and the little connector line broke, dropping him in the drink, and causing the boat to capsize. They righted okay, with help of a righting bag, but dropped out of the race.
Arnis Zvirbulis, Hobie 20, was seen back on the beach at Gilbert's. We don't know the reason. | | | Re: Key Largo Steeplechase reports

If it was upwind we would have had to pull out. It is a long way down from the top. I finally found my landing spot when the boat was just over center.
Randy Smyth was running his 15' trimaran without a jib due to problems came by to check on us. Team Jet Blast (Hobie 21 with three onboard) passed us and the wind dropped a little and we were able to pass back and take them to the finish.

Posts: 5,558 Key Largo, FL & Put-in-Bay, OH... | Arnis Zvirbulis on a Hobie 20 somehow trashed two mainsails and broke a daggerboard, and I don't think he ever got farther than Angelfish Creek. The circumstances are still unclear. Apparently, he returned to Gilbert's soon after the start because his mainsail was coming apart. He replaced it with another mainsail, exchanged battens and set out again. I'm not sure how far he got before the second mainsail started coming apart, so he again returned to Gilbert's and called it a day. I don't know how the daggerboard broke.
He said he will be back next year, though, with a better sail. | | | Re: Key Largo Steeplechase reports

Posts: 5,558 Key Largo, FL & Put-in-Bay, OH... | The boats started on time at 9:00 a.m. off Anne's Beach. Randy Smyth, singlehanding his little trimaran, capsized oceanside just before the Channel 5 bridge. Dave and Bob Ingram (F18) stopped and spent a while helping him right the boat.
Meanwhile, Skip Kaub and Jack Woehrle (SC 20) were sitting on a sandbar for a while (also oceanside of the Ch. 5 bridge). We don't know why, but they are on their way again. | | |
