However, the majority of us aren't but if we did qualify for a Worlds would you like to see the Class adopt a Gold and Silver Fleet series. I guess I could add a poll to this thread but what difference would it make. However, I believe I read somewhere that Storm Johnson, Aus A president was going to table this idea at the World AGM. I can't really think of any negatives which could come from the adoption of this notion except perhaps the person who comes last in the Gold Fleet could feel a bit pissed as if they had dropped one more place they might have won the first place in the Silver Fleet. There overall result wouldn't change though. MP*MULTIHULLS | | | Re: Gold & Silver Fleets at the next Worlds?

More boats at the Worlds? Or do you want to change the nature of the competition a bit... eg... two 50 boat fleets.
Your question is also location dependent... How many locations could scale up for more turnout.
Finally, How much demand is the there for slots over 100 boats. Seems to me that the most recent US and Aus worlds just made it to 100 boats and the intercontinental sailors could race if they wanted. Your question probably pertains to the EU Worlds where the demand for slots is high.
The Tornado Worlds split into Gold and Silver Fleets once when sailing on a smaller lake and they just could not manage the race course. Generally positive feedback.

Posts: 3,116 Annapolis, MD | Personally, I would vote no. I think the value of a Worlds (for the competitors who attend) is to get an absolute measure of your performance and your place in the pecking order. ... 90 out of the 100 competitors don't attend with expectation of winning the World championship .... They attend to compete... unless you have a compelling logistical reason to split the fleet.... I would argue that competition is best served scoring the event 1 to 100.

Posts: 954 Mumbles Y.C Wales U.K | I've only been to one World Championships where the Fleet size was over 100 (124). That was back in 1994 at Lee on Solent (Southampton UK). They didn't split the fleet just the results. I finished 55th and was seventh in the Bronze Fleet but my now wife and I won the World Novice Championship prize so we were both extremely pleased with our performance. I think it's a good idea to split the results into fleet prizes, it can only be good thing for the Class and future competition. I totally agree that 90 out of 100 don't expect to win that's why having a silver fleet or perhaps an amateur fleet could prove very popular.

Certainly having numerous prizes that reward real accomplishment at various levels in the class is a good thing.
Having different fleets in the class is a bad thing... This is where you get the conflict... "Hey... don't take me up... I am not in your fleet... we are not racing" ! I don't see how you avoid this on the water... so, One fleet... multiple prizes.
This of course is a class culture issue.... If the class chooses not to acknowledge various elements of it's demographic...... That defines the culture.
In A class, what prizes would you want to award at a worlds. Overall plus Age brackets?... Youth, Masters, Grand masters?... What else? For singlehanders.. it's tough to come up with demographics that can be given prizes that reflect the core culture of the class.
