Nobody hurt...platform in good shape...wing suffers some pretty substantial damage to the top

The 'captain' said the boat 'tipped right upside down'?

It turtled? Are they used to cats, and capsizing them ?

i can't wait to hear the first 1/2 boat sailor say, "see, I told you, those things are dangerous and shouldn't be considered for the AC." the sour grapes are simmering and waiting for the chance to strike!

Well, at least the front didn't fall off.

There's plenty of time for that, Dub.

I don't blame you for not wading into the den of iniquity over at SA - its not for the faint of heart.

But they already have come out of the woodwork over there.

You just have to remind them that they race F1 cars and not Prams for a reason.

Did someone cleat the wing-sheet? It does read that way to me.

Cayard's Update from Auckland

It was mid-December when I last wrote an update. A lot has happened since the RC 44 regatta in Miami with regard to our America’s Cup project. I was recently in Valencia for a couple of weeks working with Juan Kouyoumdjian and our design team who are based there. We also had a team meeting that lasted three days.

I arrived in Auckland today for a week to follow two issues; 1) ACRM meetings to discuss the AC72 and AC45 Class rules, new racing rules of sailing, logistics around the World Series events and the SF venue and 2) to test sail the prototype of the AC45. The meetings went well today.

Unfortunately the sailing didn’t. Our team capsized in the AC45. It wasn’t even a spectacular wipeout at 30 knots. Rather they were sitting head to wind, taking a break after the three hour training session and repairing something on the roller furler. The boat got hit with a gust from about 10 degrees off to one side and the boat slowly rolled over. No one was hurt and the boat was back at the dock within two hours.

There is very little structural damage to the wing but a lot of the “skin” of the wing came off. Our team will help ACRM get the wing repaired and back out onto the water asap. A cyclone is approaching Auckland and is due to hit later Wednesday, so it will probably be after that when Artemis Racing can get back to sailing the prototype.

The team is going to make a “playbook” on the capsize. Yes, even in a unfortunate situation, there is a lot to learn. Hopefully, if this happens again, we will be able to right the boat without losing the skin. One thing for sure, it was good it was not a 72 footer capsizing today.

Simultaneous to the activities down here, Terry Hutchinson and part of the Artemis Racing team are in Oman racing the first Extreme 40 event of the year. Our team has put in a lot of hard work to get up to speed in multihulls and have been there training for almost three weeks.

or drop a keel, roll over, and drown the crew. We've had a few of those... Lion of Englad and the collegiate boat from Texas come to mind...

St. Louis, MO,
I'm impressed with you guys.

Not one comment about a monohull sailor not knowing what he's doing or something to that effect.

We all know it can happen to the best of us.

In that situation in 20 knots and trying to park it takes a lot of consentration. I know my boat doesn't park worth a hoot. I'll bet these boats are even tougher to park.

I wish them luck and it was a good lesson learned by the crew without to much damage.

Got to admit, that was my first thought (they needed more H14 or H16 sailors!)... But, you're right, especially with something that new, it's tough to imagine how/if it could have been prevented by any of us.

Very few people sailed on a winged cat, so their accident could certainly happen to most of us.

Besides, before the first Hobie 14, who knew that sailing backwards is potentially disastrous?

Unless the C-Class guys already experimented with powered up backwards sailing, those guys may have discovered a new practical limitation of winged cats: compared to normal ones, they might require more rear flotation for powerful backwards sailing - or a bell for the guy shouting "DIVE, DIVE, DIVE!"
