Hey all, I'm new to the sailing world, did my little bit down in the Caribbean on a Hobie Wave. I'm looking to get into the sport and am wondering what a good boat would be to start on. I am 6'2, 210 lbs. I am looking for something i can grow into and add components too so I don't end up buying one boat after the next. Someone told me to look into the F18, where i could just use the main, then after i feel comfortable with it, i can start using the jib and traps and things of that nature. Any thoughts or suggestions? Also, I'm right on the KY/TN border so I'm looking for some hands on experience

I think I saw a similar post somewhere else. One of the real keys will be hooking up with some other cat sailors to help you. Probably learn more in a weekend with them than all summer by yourself. Also, you can read up on it. Get a copy of Rick White's and Phil Berman's books as well [both are available at the catsailor online store].

As far as boats go, personally I think an TheMightyHobie18 might be a better first boat for someone your size. Up front investment will be significantly lower and parts and sails, etc. are going to be easier to find and less expensive. Its still a lot of boat for someone new to sailing, so don't take it lightly - you can find yourself in big trouble in a hurry.

Sail it for a couple years, and then you can think about upgrading. H18s (in good condition and well maintained) seem to be in the flatter part of the depreciation curve, so you could probably sell it for close to what you buy it for and then put the money into an upgrade.

This is the path I took and it seems to be working for me.

rehmbo, Thanks for the reply, helps out tremendously! I'll have to keep my eye open for some TheMightyHobie18's. What are some things to look for in purchasing a used boat? I'm mostly seeing pre '85's for sale. anything in particular these boats are notorious for such as soft spots or cracks in the hull where it wouldn't be obvious? also, how will I know when it's time to purchase a new sail? Things to know of that nature would be a true help. thanks in advance!
