California | Any glaring errors in line dimension on my order list? Feedback appreciated. It's for a very early Nacra 5.5 Uni. Any suggestions for most economical (rec sailing) yet suitable material welcome for each given use. There's a lot of sailing line to choose from at the marine stores - polyseter or polyethylene (dyneema, spectra), and there seems to be different weaves. What's the deal?
Traveller - 5/16, 10ft?
Rudder pull down - 3/16, 4ft a side
Rudder pull up shock cord - 5/16, 5ft a side
Daggerboard side loaders - 5/16 shock cord (doubled over), I'm guessing 5ft a side
Trapeze cord - 1/4in, the manual says 3ft per wire
Downhaul - ?
Tramp lacing - 3/16 (I actually already bought 30ft of this for my old dual lacing tramp)
Righting rope - I actually plan to recycle 12-15ft of an old 8 or 9mm climbing rope. Can't see an issue with this.
Basically doing it all, except the halyard and main sheet, they seem alright.

Kingston SE South Australia | IMO would be worth copying the newer Nacra dimensions, The rudder shockcord will only be about 6ft all up and will be closer to 10mm as it has a lot of tension, definitely best to get it from a Nacra supplier because I haven't found another shockcord that holds the tension properly. Best to get some of their stainless clips to hold the shockcord. Definitely worth getting it done by your local Nacra dealer if you can but if not you will be surprised at how tight you need it. Trapeze normally goes from one side to the other approx 1ft longer than your beam length. Rudder pull down on the 5.8's is one piece that goes from one rudder to the other that way you can pull the rudders down from anywhere on the boat and the tails don't drag in the water. Dagger board shock cord is same thickness as the rudder pull up cord, rubs on the back of the boards so needs a bit of size about it. Putting the rudder shockcord on is tricky the first time if your not sure I can explain it but you need it really tight, if you order it from a Nacra dealer they can cut it to the correct length which will save you a lot of mucking around.

Kingston SE South Australia | Don't need to beef up the trap shock cord, 4mm is fine taking it from one side to the other gives it the stretch you need to move about on the wire, if you only do a short length it wont stretch far enough

Florida Suncoast, Dunedin Caus... | I would get rid of the bungee system on the rudders and put a pull up system using a line. You need a couple of Harken 404 blocks, CL-211-AN clam cleats, Rope balls and I use 4mm Robline 8-plait line. I can send you a couple pic's if you want to see how it's done.
Problem with the shock cord system, If your rudders hit something and kick up you have no steering. I don't care what cord you use it starts stretching almost immediately. Then they sag down and drag on the beach etc. With the pull up line you put the rudders up and they stay up.
For the pull down line I use a three strand 1/4" twisted Nylon. You can find it at west marine. (the only thing I buy for my cat there) The advantage of this line is it stretches and the plastic cleats hold it well. If you get a line that doesn't have any stretch in it what will happen is this, as the line seats into the cleat it will move backward a bit. This allows the rudder to kick back a bit which affects the helm.
