Why did Sports Illustrated downgrade the Worrel spread to just a mention? Was there not enough exciting racing and action shots? I think all these guys have demonstrated the highest standards of sportsmanship under the most extreme conditions, so SI is missing out on a great spread. Maybe we should all email them!

Probably because the event doesn't involve sticks, balls, or obscene salaries for the players......

offer me a chance to let you in on a little secret about ESPN, SI that I have come to be enlightened about.

They only care about money and marketability.

I have dealt extensively with ESPN mostly (I imagine SI is similar) with my other labor of love, Paintball. Simply the only way to get coverage is to prove that the audience will take to it. Unfortunately, that means that they will only risk making a move when they see that other media outlets (like Rick and Mary) have succeeded in finding a niche in the market.

So keep it up guys [Linked Image]

Hi Rebecca

It is my understanding that Sports Illustrated will be doing a four or five page spread in their next edition including a number of pictures.

Regards

Mark

According to who???? That's not the impression we got at all while we were out there, from talking to their reporter Kelly King, pictured here with me, but I hope you're correct.

Nice job I see you got your photo taken.

I spoke to Mike Worrell a couple days ago with regards to the past three weeks, his plans for next year etc. I was interested to know how he was going to gather the printed material for the 2002 race for us to use to obtain future sponsors. During this discussion he mentioned that Sports Illustrated is going to do an article with a number of photos. I don’t know if this is definite however it did sound promising.

As we all know the Worrell 1000 is a great event and we would obviously like to see it grow and be recognized on a broader spectrum. I will be keeping an eye out for any printed material I can find.

Regards,

Mark

The following is an internet link to the Online

version of Sports

Illustrated Magazine (May 27th issue). Once a month SI

publishes an

adventure issue that goes to subscribers only. In

addition to the regular

content of mainline sports coverage this issue also

features extreme

sports. The Worrell 1000 story is in this issue.

The story on the internet appears to include the full

story in the print

version. But with only one small photo that is not in

the print issue. The

magazine deadline of Saturday also precluded any

coverage of the very

dramatic, storm tossed, last leg into Virginia Beach.

The print issue has four photos including a dynamite

opening two-page shot

of Nigel and Alex of Team Tommy Bahama. The others are

a photo of Team

LexisNexis turned over at Cape Hatteras with Team

Rudee's Restaurant in the

background, Team PI Sailing launching from the beach,

and a head &

shoulders shot of Todd Hart and Davis Murray of Team

Caribbean / Cat Fever.

Cheers

Mark
